Clive: This was a song that came to us quite late in the process after we'd already completed our original 'set list'. I was a bit apprehensive about covering it because to me it was a sub-standard Murmur song (let’s not forget a sub-standard Murmur song was still better than/equal to anything else around in 1983…and even today for that matter!) plus, apart from the chance to enjoy some bass guitar strumming, I wasn't confident about my ability to replicate some of the intricate guitar parts, but I did better than I'd thought and any inadequacies were smoothed out by the vocals. I love it when a song comes together quickly, not because I'm lazy and don't want to work at something, but because I believe the greatest songs/musical performances are those that come quickly and naturally. Plus, I believe that was R.E.M.’s approach, especially in the early 1980s.

Rob: It’s one thing to hear Michael Stipe repeat the word “catapult” over and over; it’s quite another to hear me sing it, and thus I was completely prepared to dismiss this cover song, despite finding the R.E.M. version pleasant enough. Yet, I’m surprised how well this turned out (at the risk of looking self-satisfied). “Catapult” is a rather interesting song to analyze given that the full Stephen Hague version has finally surfaced. I regard that version as the “epic” version of the song—extended and embellished, with additional parts and vocal overdubs. The Hague version really illustrates how a song can be over-produced or, I think, over-realized (and I’m not just referring to the synth overdubs).

Thanks Remixomatosys! I appreciate the comment....

...I can certainly see the Honeymoon is over....I suppose one can only post the words "great job" only so many times. Or politely not say anything if one thinks they sound like crap.

However, aside from sharing these covers, one of our other goals of the project was to get people talking about these songs--sharing memories or discussing how they were recorded.

Anyway, Friday (or early Saturday) I plan to post our verison of Title--I was originally very excited about this...almost as excited as when we posted Ha (we get paid for it). I'm curious about opinions on th ecover and the REM song in general...although I'm not keen on being gutted by the public! But oh well.

Well, twistedkite. I expected that response from you.
But to be true: this was the first Owenshire cover I didn't hear completely. I like "Catapult" though, but this time your choice of song or your reinterpretation of that didn't make me go crazy on this thread. So: the honeymoon may not be over, it just didn't click this time (with me).

Fair enough...it's a tough balance. I don't want to appear needy; at the same time, I was getting used to the bi-weekly discussions (all compliments aside). At least I have to applaud the community for sticking to the polite adage of "if you have nothing nice to say..."

Still, I liked this cover! Oh well...there's plenty more...for better or worse...

Well, there's been a small snag....I'm actually trying to convince Clive to use a different instrumental of the song that he recorded with more abrasive chorus guitars. He won't be back until Monday...so...I will post it as soon as he and I come to an agreement...but it's on deck so to speak...
