There were some interesting bits I suppose but the questions were pretty banal. There was an interesting bit where Michael completely denied the $80 million figure for the last warner deal
I WANTED MOUNT NOTHING!!!

i thought the questions were funny, really liked the interview. funny how the 80 million figure isn't correct, would love to know how much it actually was as michael didn't really give an indication as to whether it was more or less

That was just an assumption at the time, based on the sales of their then latest ablums (which of course included AFTP and OOT selling 12 million or something, and Monster just a bit less than that.). The real number wouldn't be clear even yet I guess, since it's probably based on sales all the way up to and including CiN and PTPLPHPG. I think it's safe to assume it was MUCH less than that, ultimately.

im talking about the record deal, the press reported they got paid 80 million for 6 albums and a greatest hits. michael said that figure wasn't the true amount as the press just made it up, so no one knows if it was more. it could easily be. R.E.M. were on a roll at that point, monster was a very very successful tour so who knows
Not sure what you mean, but while a record deal may include an advance (paid out at once) the actual amount paid thereunder is often based on the actual sales of the records released under the deal. Based on the estimates of such sales, one can make an assumption of the total value of the deal. This is what was done in the press back in 1996, when people applied the assumed royalties for future albums under the new deal to previous sales number. Thus, they came up with the 80 million number. This presumably had very little to do with reality already then, and much less so over time given the declining sales. I repeat that it is likely that the actual number is much, much lower (and probably would have been even if they had continue to sell huge amounts of records).
This is of course based on structures in the 90's, today is much different. And I'm happy for anyone with more detailed insight to offer more info, But yeah, I was also talking about the record deal... ;-)

He was kind of on-message with much of the stuff we heard out of disbanding-press-day, but it was nice to Jo to get such a relatively lengthy and nice one-on-one.

I need to watch this. If no one answers before me Queen I'll see if I can figure out what he's talking about.
Sometimes Michael speaks his own personal language which I love.

Earlier, he mentioned how he'll miss playing live. In that passage he then said he thought it hadn't quite "settled on him yet" that he would indeed never get to do that again, but he's glad he got the chance to do it.
[Insert stipeyes comment about how they then should come out of retirement, if JMS is gonna miss it so much.

I really enjoyed the interview, I thought Jo Whiley did a good job.
It looked like Michael had a bit of a tear in his eyes when talking about not playing with the band ever again.
I can't believe the song he wants to be remembered for is Supernatural superserious
Its funny, as time goes by, like with anything else I feel I have made my peace with the fact they have split, watching things like that brings back the sadness and regret that they will never write another song or play live again.

Yes really by all means if it hurts that much not to play on stage again then by all means, do a damn tour and get over the midlife crisis Mr. Stipe. Besides eventually he may get bored with reblogging artwork of nude men on tumblr. It's nice to see him on some form of a social network but he's like the best entertainer I can think of. Peter and Mike are already going to be on stage together. Obviously they don't want to give up live performance.

I'd be more than pleased if Michael overcame his midlife crisis and would decide to do what he does best.

I don’t think Michael doesn’t like going on stage anymore, but I think he feels he isn’t able to give 100% anymore and that he wants to leave a good impression to his fans. At least, this is what the Salon interview made me think about:
The tours were always amazing. When we were on stage, whatever problems we were having behind the scenes disappeared. We never took them on stage, and so as a live act, we forever gave it everything we had.
The second I was 40, which was 11 years ago, I thought to myself, “Look, I can’t.” I’m really tired, but I will do a tour because the guys want to do it and we need it – it’s good camaraderie. I can’t let myself give just a portion – I have to give everything I have for every song or I’m just that sad guy that’s in his 40s and holding onto some teenage dream. We didn’t move through the last decade with that feeling at all. I gave everything I had.
The idea of not ever being able to do that again is really sad for me. It’s actually painful to think about.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the ones who criticize him for his touring denial would be the ones who would criticize him for not giving 100%.
If he had been lukewarm to music, he wouldn’t have looked so uncomfortable the last time he went on stage with Patti Smith.
IMHO he still loves music, but he is so respectful with fans that he doesn’t want to disappoint fans’ expectations.
He deserves to be respected.
