In an interview that he did with
Intercourse Magazine, published in January, Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT revealed that his band has started work on a new album, and that he has written a total of five songs inspired by R.E.M.
The publication, with headquarters in New York City, seems to be paper-based only and of limited distribution, so I couldn't have access to the magazine but the interview is referenced in various places across the Internet, such as wikipedia.
