Hi
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but does anyone know if there are plans to continue the deluxe edition reissues?
Apparently R.E.M. had been considering calling it quits for a while, so it seems weird to even get the ball rolling on them in the first place if they were just going to abruptly stop (not that I can claim to know anything about the whole timeline of things).
I hope they do, I had always liked the earlier albums, but since I only became a fan after the IRS years, I always liked the later albums more. Then when the deluxe Murmur cd came out, I just fell in love with it, especially the second live disc.
Anyhoo, does anyone know what the situation is there? Like I say, I'm sure it's been covered before, though I do seem to remember Peter saying something a while back along the lines of 'wait until you hear the ATS demoes down the line' or words to that effect.
Any info would be appreciated.

Mike Mills confirmed that a document reissue will come out as a part of the 25th anniversary reissues.
The warner era albums have all been re-released, with not so much bonus material; so I'd expect future reissues of the warners albums.
A box set of rarities is set to appear at some point, given that Peter Buck mentioned it in many interviews.
Also, Bertis Downs, in a recent interview, confirmed that he'll work on future r.e.m. compilations.
Finally, a lot of material was left off the collapse into now release (documentary, the hansa sessions); I won't be surprised if it will appear in the near future.
I hope for some live shows from the accelerate tour, too

whatever happens, i hope to god that:
- if there will be reissues of the warners albums, they will include a second disc of bonus material, whatever that may be, and NOT add extra tracks to the end of the original album. i despise it when that happens.
- chronic town will at some point be remastered and released as a stand-alone disc (with maybe a bonus disc, but again, NOT on the same one)
- the bonus content will consist of outtakes, demos and unreleased material, and not live versions of album tracks.

to really understand me, you must read between the lines.
these are just empty spaces that mean nothing.

Thanks for the info, I was wondering the other day if Document would be released as a deluxe.
Any unreleased material is very welcome is it not? If the Hansa sessions are to be put out in the future, that will be worth waiting for!
It's one thing to have to wait a few years for the next official album to be released, but quite another now that we haven't got the anticipation of knowing there will be new material in the writing.

I'm baffled as to why people would think the Document reissue wouldn't come out just because R.E.M. have disbanded. All's it takes it a look at the back catalogs of Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead or nearly any other artist who is no longer active to know that just because an artist has died (or no longer makes music) to know that won't stop the archival releases from coming. If anything, it may even open up the vaults in ways that have never been done before. After all, members of R.E.M. have gone on record numerous times to state that the box set wouldn't come out until after R.E.M. had called it quits.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

If you remember a vinyl discussion we had earlier in the year, there was a Document Mobile Fidelity set to release this month. For some reason the actual release of that product has been postponed.
I think, although I could be wrong (I'm just guessing) that the postponement is somehow linked to the release of the Document's 25th anniversary package. The type of link I presume is of a commercial nature: which product's launch, if any, should take precedence over the other.
In the very first press release that announced Lifes Rich Pageant, last year, it was indicated that "On the same date, the remastered original album will be reissued by Mobile Fidelity on 180-gram vinyl in faithfully replicated LP packaging." This wasn't the case, since the boxset appeared in July and the vinyl in November.
At this point I wonder if Warner's albums will also release as 25th anniversary packages, and if they do, what type of content will they offer, besides the remaster.

So far, none of the vinyl reissues from the I.R.S. era include any bonus material. The only way to get that is via the compact discs or in a digital format. At any rate, lots of artists continue to release material (archival and otherwise) after the artist has retired or died so I don't see why R.E.M. would be any different.

I agree. There was a very limited edition of a double LP, 180 gram vinyl, Songs for a Green World, whose release date was January 31st, 2012. While that isn't Warner nor I.R.S. it could be said that this is the first R.E.M. product to see the light of day in 2012. Here's hoping the second R.E.M. related product to appear in 2012 is Document, whether Mobile Fidelity or I.R.S.

Curious to see what will round out the Document CD reissue. Anyone know if there were a lot of demos from that period? I think Pageant's my favorite of the reissues to date, followed closely by Fables. Nice to get something more than a live show as a bonus disc.

I'd like to hear a decent version of Title. It's a good tune and while the lyrics never got finished it liked shouting along with it (live version below).
I have a cassette of demo of it, which I'm sure is an instrumental and is from the Green era.
Title was first played at a show shortly after Document was completed. Did it exist during demos and mixing?

Mike said that they wouldn't be doing DLO, since it's not a proper album.

Let's hope that they'll hit us with something ancient and fresh...
