Good stuff! It's a pretty weird place, while pretty run down nowadays.

No tickling the lead singer when he is reaching for a note that he can no longer hit, OK?" JMS, post-audience visit during The One I Love in Bergen, 2008

Nice--good to know there will still be some REM "landmarks" to visit when I finally get around to making the pilgrimage to Athens and the surrounding area.
...I'm still pissed that the church is no more...not even the steeple! I know this is off topic, but to me this is just another example of REM taking a big dump on their past. They should have footed the money to have it repaired and or preserved if for nothing else than the tourism it could bring to Athens...same thing with that railroad trestle...
No one would accuse them of being vain since it would be widely known (and/or assumed) they'd be doing it for the fans and not for simple "self-glorification."
Christ. Sometimes the band that I love really irritates me! (just like my kids...but that's another story...)

The steeple is still there. If my memory serves, I thought there was supposed to be some agreement with the folks that built Steeplechase Apartments that the church would remain intact. I may be wrong about that but that's what I seem to remember reading somewhere. Personally, I can understand R.E.M. not having any desire to preserve the steeple or the trestle and don't fault them for not becoming personally involved. That said, I do think those landmarks are a huge part of the attraction of visiting Athens, especially if you're a R.E.M. fan. However, when and if the day comes when they're both removed, there's still lots to see and do there.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I understand that the Finster family and friends still host a festival week there in the Paradise Gardens but it's probably not enough financially to keep it maintained, so I'm glad that the gardens have received some funding now. Does anybody know if Rubin Millers whirligig farm from Left of Reckoning is still there?
It would be good if the band members had a little input into the REM Athens landmarks, (the trestle seems to be constantly under threat) if only to preserve them for the fans for our pilgrimages, and for future fans who will only have things of the band from the past to look back on.
I think we are so very lucky to be of the same generation as the band, and to have understanding of why and how the band became what they are. We knew about the Athens scene at the time it was happening and it was very exciting, but future fans won't have that. I think it's really important now to preserve the landmarks, as the only tangible things the fans now have with the band are these, and they are very important to us.
