I reckon I would have watched Tourfilm about 50 times over the years. Last night I watched it all the way through for the first time in a good few years....for the first time ever I noticed a second drummer/percussionist during King of Birds.
Funny that I had never noticed before....but does anyone know who it was and whether he was on stage for other songs.

I had a look at tourfilm after reading your post. I have never noticed the second drummer till now.
I did a little research on the web and found out it's actually Animal from the Muppets.
I have since found out that Animal would often do the more complex drumming that Bill Berry couldn't handle.

That someone just pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand.

The world-renowned drummer from Micro and the Melons, David Russel!

Why is there always someone with the truth?
I even avoided giving the full background as to not so clearly have removed the humour from the thread... Oh well.

The humour was good but the facts would be good too
David Russel was tour manager for the band from 1989 or so. Think he took over from Curtis Goodman (seen in the video for The One I Love) who died of cancer or something. David is also seen in Rough Cut, the bearded guy filmed during the SNL portions. HE was still around in 1998 when I met him, but somewhere thereafter I guess Bob Whitaker took over and held the position up until and including 2008.
He played congas on one or two songs per show during that your, and then drums for the encore band of "Micro (Microwave/Mark Mytrowitz, guitar tech) and the Melons" during the last show of the Green tour. That band was tour crew + R.E.M. members.

It was during their performance of "King of Birds" in Chapel Hill in '89 when a fan had made their way onto the stage and was headed for Stipe when they were snagged by security. That's one of those non-musical R.E.M. moments I'll always remember. It's a wonder the guy was even able to get on stage to start with.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I think I've watched tour film at least 30 times through since I first got it and did not notice a second drummer.
Funny you mention Animal. He was/is my favorite muppet. When I was a little kid I would take temper tantrums if I didn't see the Muppet show. And when Animal came on I laughed like crazy.
A woman got up on stage in Philly on the 1995 tour. I think she too was headed for Michael when security grabbed her arm.
There was another instance I witnessed in 1999 at the Merriweather in Maryland. There was a woman annoying Michael, she kept screetching. He told her several times nicely to be quiet. Finally he got fed up and helped pull her and her boyfriend up on stage just so security could take them away. LOL! They were eventually let back in but lost their seats in the front. Michael is quite strong because the woman went at least 200 pounds that he was helping up. I was happy because I got to see Michael flex his muscles.
