I don't know if this is old news, but I hadn't seen it...

From Pitchfork's summary of the Primavera Sound line-up:

A new supergroup will also perform in tribute to power pop icons Big Star, performing the band's 1978 album Third. The group includes Jody Stephens (Big Star), Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Chris Stamey (the dB's), Ken Stringfellow (Posies), R.E.M. producer Mitch Easter (Let's Active), and Brett Harris. The performance will also include appearances by the singers Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), and more.

There's at least three performances of Big Star Third this year, as far as I know, there could be more, but these three I have documented them elsewhere:

1. South by Southwest in March
2. London's Barbican Centre (March or May, memory failing here)
3. The Primavera Sound in May-June

Edit: Barbican is May 28, 2012

There's a Big Star documentary premiering at this year's South by Southwest, it's called "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me Now". Meanwhile, the date of the South by Southwest performance (with Mike Mills) has been announced and it's March 15.

"We’re performing Sister Lovers in Austin on the evening of March 15, as part of the SXSW Music Festival. It’s going to be at the beautiful Paramount Theater and will be preceded by the world premiere of “Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story,” a full-length documentary about the band" (see: http://bigstarthird....show-march-15th).

Here's a report from Austin360.com on the screening of Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story as well as the subsequent performance of Third/Sister Lovers from last night at SXSW.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Another report from the Chicago Sun-Times: Mike Mills cancelled

Quote

R.E.M.'s Mike Mills originally was scheduled to be on stage for the show, but he canceled due to illness. The former band's guitarist, Buck, appeared instead. He merely lurked in the background for two songs, the cover of the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" and "You Can't Have Me."

Thanks for the update. I wonder if Mills will be able to make it for Alejandro Escovedo's show at the Continental Club on Sunday? That looks like one hell of a line up.

He was also scheduled to speak at a conference with Erin Potts, his name no longer appears on this page where he was confirmed a couple of months ago. It all indicates he cancelled both the Big Star show and the panel: http://schedule.sxsw...s/event_MP10928

Cool!

Wonder if it was a Mills hangover that prevented him from taking part in the Big Star thing, or if he really came down with something.
Hope he won't cancel in London in May anyway...

There's also that show tonight with Alejandro Escovedo at the Continental.

The documentary is just fantastic. I saw it here with Chris Stamey leading some musicians through some "Third" songs, plus "Thirteen" and, I think, a Chris Bell solo song or two. The music brought tears of joy to my eyes. Go see the doc, if you can. If not, I'm sure it'll be on dvd soon, if it isn't already. I wish I had been able to see Chilton play just once, but oh well. Michael is in the doc for a few seconds singing "Kangaroo" at a performance of "Third/Sister Lovers" in London, I believe it was, a few years back. Mike is also in it, briefly, talking about the influence Big Star had on the guys. It's well worth every music fanatic's time.

I also caught the documentary (as well as the Stamey/Fellow Travelers performance) at the Full Frame Documentary Festival in Durham a few weeks ago. I remember Mills and others mentioning Big Star, Chilton, etc. through the years but I never took a real interest in Big Star until the late 90's/early 00's when I picked up #1 Record/Radio City. Even then, it took a while for me to appreciate their music. The Big Star Third/Sister Lovers concerts that Stamey organized at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro back in 2010 only deepened my appreciation, same for the documentary. I've read that it will be available on DVD this fall. Prior to that it'll have it's proper theatrical release in early July. At that time it'll also be available via iTunes and In Demand.
