I just listen to leaving new york (it's still one of my R.E.M. favorites!) and I don't understand something. They sing : it's easier to leave than to be left behind, leaving was never my proud, leaving New York never easy, I saw the light fading out.
But I think that this are 2 different things. First it's easy to leave, then leaving New York never easy. Can someone explain this?

I guess what he means that while leaving New York would be very difficult, getting left behind by the one he loves would be even worse. That is just my interpretation.

No, it means Leaving New York is pure shit. I am one of the world's most devoted R.E.M. fans, but that song is garbage.

Well, the lyrics are corny, the pop harmonies are somehow surprising adult-contamporary-like, but it's still R.E.M. doing what they do. A perfect pop single, a honest love song. I like it.

It reminds me of what Michael says in Undertow. " I can't say I'm fearful, I can't say I'm not afraid." Fearful and Afraid mean the same thing.
MS to Me: Where else could antelopes jump off tall buildings and submarines be fueled by melody?
