I've heard of them but I haven't listened to any of their stuff. The Mills guy has the closest look to the real thing. Who in the hell is the fellow on the right supposed to be?? He looks nothing like Peter or Bill. The Stipe persona looks like Boy George with a bald head, and the famous blue stripe, I guess helps, to a degree. At least you get who he's trying to look like.

They played on the One Show on the BBC a few years ago when Michael Stipe was on the show promoting Accelerate. I'm pretty sure there's a clip on youtube of it. Also I think "Imitation of Stipe" would have been a much better name!

They put on a really good show.  You know you'll hear some good tunes - they play them well and it makes a fun evening.

Sting.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Wow! I've seen a few things they've done on Youtube, and have thought it sounded decent...but that was horrendous in terms of the vocal performance. Both JMS similarity and actually singing on key...

Stipe is just that a tribute to Michael, not really R.E.M.  I think they should just have named themselves after a song and they should have their own style. I am not big on tribute artists.

First off if you're going to front a tribute band you need to sound more like the singer of the real band.

At least they are having fun while they are playing. According to Stipe, REM wasnt having fun in the end.

REM is there for the taking. A good chance for a band to make a decent wage as a cover band is on offer.

I know 3 of the original 4 BABBA,  ABBA cover band line up. They made a motza out of it. Went from poor school teachers and one bludger to millionaires. I dunno what the other one was doing. They licensed the idea somehow, That doesnt surprise me coz arny bumpstead was always a hungry bastard.

The three I know would have been the last people on earth who considered themselves musicians to form an ABBA cover band, so anythings possible.

i always had a problem with this band's name.  surely they could have come up with something better than stipe.
i remember watching the one show performance.  i thought it was dreadful, but they must have been so nervous playing with michael in the audience.

There's a difference.  BABBA are good!

They were terrible, makes you realise how good the real thing was.

The best name I heard for an r.e.m. tribute band was   'are we them ?' .
I thought that was pretty witty , matched only by the Amy Winehouse tribute , Amy Housewine.

If I understand it correctly, they are indeed no longer called Stipe, but R.E.M.U.K.

Are We Them? is a great tribute name btw.

There's another band, from the US I think, who for some stupid reason always have "Peter" and "Mike" on the wrong sides of the stage. Why bother getting a bald singer, learning the moves and the songs, and not getting that tiny detail right?

Surely the best name for a tribute band has to be 'Different Strokes'?

Though I reckon Amy Housewine is pretty good as well! :)
