CIN came in a ridiculously low #73 when considering performers like Britney Spears were 20 spots above them. The full album list is here: http://www.villagevo...op/albums/2011/. If you look at "singles," you will find "We All Go Back to Where We Belong" and "Oh My Heart," amongst others (http://www.villagevo...p/singles/2011/).
But, when assessing for "enthusiasm" or "average points per vote (for albums that got at least 10 votes)" when "the default point-value is 10, but there are more <10 votes than >10 votes, so an enthusiasm of more than 11 is actually notable." it was #2! See here for a full explanation (and a little digging amongst these statistics is quite fascinating beyond this): https://pub.needleba...2011 Enthusiasm.

I'm not surprised.
Having lived with the album for a while now it is definately not one of their best albums.
The main reason being that the second half of the album is very weak.
The first half is great. The first five songs I think are as good an opening to any REM album, but it starts to slide with EDIYTW; I like the music on that song but it is the first song with those cheesy Stipe lyrics which he has resorted to in recent years.
The rest of the album is pretty bland or filler and even though I really like That someone is you, it can only be described as filler.

And just to add my biggest disappointment is that this piece of music did not make it on to the album. As Stipe says it is beautiful.
I know the horns are on Oh my heart, but this deserves a place on its own at the end of the song.

Totally agree with you. I still think they could have editted Uberlin (and the bridge still feels awkward) but the first half of the album is much superior to the second. I actually think the Christmas single instrumental remix from 2010 of EDIYTW is better than what ended on the album.

I think the 2nd half of the album has some really strong songs such as Honey, Walk It Back and Marlon Brando. Overall, it is a solid 4 star album in my book.

It was my number one album of the year and got thirty points from me. Made a difference. I know a lot of critics who had it just below their top ten. It was well received. I also know a lot of writers who didn't hear it at all. Didn't get a lot of attention when it was initially released (no TV/ few Stipe interviews/etc.). That didn't help matters. In time, I think people will gain an appreciation of it the way they have with New Adventures. Few talk about how reviled that album was by many, including fans, upon its release in 1996.

I totally agree about the NAIHF relationship.

About a year on, I think the record has brilliant moments (most notably Uberlin, which is as good as anything they ever recorded) and fun bubblegum moments (That Someone Is You, Alligator), but it also has some real clunkers (Every Day Is Yours to Win, It Happened Today, Walk It Back) that would't have sounded out of place on the dreadful Around the Sun. To the extent that Collapse Into Now was near the top of any polls, I think it was a sort of lifetime achievement award.
The real problem was Michael -- he just spat out too many of his kind of wrote and blah lyrics of the post-Bill era in the speak-singing style that first emerged with songs like Revolution (remember that dud) and the less annoying Departure.
