Just wondering if anyone has any idea what the band did with their old stage props? Like all the fluorescent lighting for the Up set, the LUV lights for the In Time, the metallic sheets for the Around The Sun set etc. Are they just smashed up and recycled after the tour or are they actually stored somewhere?

If they are stored in some warehouse they'd need a pretty big area as I heard in some REM documentary that for every tour the band had 3 identical complete stage sets: one that's being taken down from the night before, one that's currently being played on and then one more which is being put up for the next show.

I know that protions of the Up set were reused for the Reveal promo tour, but what happened after that? R.E.M. put so much effort and creativity into their stage props it'd be a shame if they were just recycled

Also, throughout the last 31 years, R.E.M. must have had an unbelievable amount of equimpent (amps, speakers, mics, instruments) that the band wouldn't have paid for out of their own pocket. What will happen to all these? Will they just be auctioned off or? I know that R.E.M. has an office in Athens but I really don't think it'd be anywhere near big enough to store equipment of this magnitude.

I have no idea, but I sure would like to get my hands on one of those dinosaurs.

It looked like some of their equipment was on stage during the recent tribute concert at the 40 Watt. I know they have also lent out their equipment to others such as Kristin Hersh and Charles Cleaver (the mellotron used during the Big Star Sister Lovers/Third shows in Chapel Hill in 2010). I realize that doesn't answer your question but maybe they plan on hanging onto their equipment for the time being. As for the stage props, who knows but I think it would be cool to see some of them on display in either the Smithsonian or the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Maybe even the Georgia Hall of Fame as well.

As for the dinosaurs, I've never noticed but does Buck use those in his shows with other bands such as the Baseball Project?
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I've only seen the Baseball Project at an in-store. No dinosaurs there.

I actually asked HQ staff about when I was in town for the final events, and their storage space and rehearsal hall on W Clayton Street will continue to exist. Obviously, both Peter and Mike will use instruments, amps etc for various projects going forward. I guess Dewitt will continue to manage that place. However, wouldn't think huge stage props etc are stored there as it's by no means a large warehouse.

I've never see any dinosaurs outside of R.E.M. I assume when he himself has to transport and set up his stage gear dinosaurs are not a top priority...

As for the RnR HoF exhibition, someone just mentioned that the R.E.M. exhibition there was in storage(!) and not on display. Hopefully it's just part of a general rotation of all the stuff they have there.

Stage props? Itineraries, crew clothing and stuff, yes. But stage props I don't think I've seen on there.

Most if its in storage. Some stuff ends up in Michael's house or the office (there is a rope light sculpture in the window of one of the offices, and you can see the multi-colored lights in the "On the Fly" takeaway show.)

And of course the orange lamps from the Monster tour hang in the starway up to the office, I took this in 2009:

There is a bunch of images publically available online, including this 32-picture gallery:

I don't really have anything beyond what's in those pictures.

I always wanted to visit the fanclub. One time when I went to Athens I contacted David and asked if it was okay to visit, he said due to Bertis being in the office that week he wasn't allowed to let fans visit.  He said if it was up to him he would allow fans to visit all the time.

Odd. I've met Bertis in the office both times I've been there.

That's just what I think. This was 2002 so maybe Bertis lightened up about having guest's.

I was also told during a trip to Athens back in the mid-90s that HQ wasn't open to visitors.

I assume David may have over time applied a slightly different approach than his predecessors on the job. I also assume that they in mid-90's had much more problems with nutcases hanging around on Michael's front porch etc, than they do now, and so kept the office much more closed back then. The current hardcore fans travelling there are perhaps a bit more sensible, with a few exceptions of course...

I have on other hand also been witness to a fan being denied a visit by David because said fan had been harassing JMS non-stop, in a rather unpleasant way, for a signature etc the night before at the 40 Watt. The fan was however not told this was the reason... ;) A decent approach, in my mind.

When I visited Athens in 2000 I did a tour of the usual REM related locations but decided not to call in the office.  I got a battery for my camera in the shop over the road and the bloke in there told me I should go and visit.  He seemed to think it was fairly normal for fan's to be made welcome.  I decided it was a bit stalker esq so didn't knock on the door but sort of wish I had in retrospect.

I did play pool with the lady who sold and fitted the bands specs however!

During that first trip to Athens back around '94, there was someone at the visitor's center who gave me an Athens city map on which they had penciled in the locations of the band members' homes (past and present). I was only interested in seeing the usual sites (R.E.M. related and otherwise, such as The Tree that Owns Itself) so that was completely unexpected and unwarranted. I recall hearing she got the axe not long after that. During my next trip I hope to take Paul Buchart's guided tour. I wanted to do that back in 2008 but there just wasn't enough time to squeeze it in.

What's Athens like for R.E.M. landmarks? Is there a lot of sites to see? I understand it's where the bands from and they've so much history there, but is it enough to warrant a trip someday?

Also, R.E.M. stuff aside, what's the area like to visit? :)

These became such frequently asked questions that they were eventually turned into a sticky thread but since the most recent upgrade to the board I'm not sure how to direct you to it. Off the top of my head I would say, their old house on Barber Street, the steeple, the trestle, Wuxtry, the 40 Watt, the newly renovated Georgia Theatre (which I haven't had the pleasure of visiting yet), the Lucy Cobb Chapel, Weaver D's, the kudzu field where the cover of Murmur was photographed, and the church (can't think of the name) where some of Accelerate was recorded. I'm sure I'm leaving lots of stuff out but there is quite a bit of stuff to see for the R.E.M. fan. In addition to that there's all the cool things like the double barreled cannon and The Tree That Owns Itself. There's also lots of cool shops to visit as well as eating places (there's a guide to those on here somewhere too). All of this with WUGA as your background music. There was also a real nice old country station on AM when I was there in '94 but I'm not sure if it's still on the air or what it's call letters are.

As for when to visit, the first time I went was during the late summer before school had let back in so things were less busy without all of the students. I've also been when school was in session and the town was buzzing. I enjoyed both of those visits, plus the times I've been down for Murmurs meet ups during AthFest. It can be pretty sweltering in the South during summertime so if you don't like the heat and humidity I would suggest visiting in the Spring or Fall. The latter would be my preference just because Fall and R.E.M. seem to go together for some reason.

**Edited to add: Just realized you asked what it's like to visit not when it's best to visit. If you've ever visited the South before I'd say Athens is pretty typical for a college town such as Chapel Hill. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore, particularly if you like good eats, sightseeing in general and browsing bookshops, record stores and the like. Lots of friendly people too but as you'll probably read in the guides (Flagpole publishes an excellent one), it's best not to travel alone at night. So far, all of my experiences have been good but during my last visit to Athens I was approached by someone who's intentions were less than good. Someone using a scam to try get money from my friend and I. So, unfortunately you need to keep an eye out for stuff like that. Most of the motels/hotels are close to downtown so it'll make the majority of your visit very walkable. The Days Inn (or the "Dazed Inn" as some like to refer to it) is within walking distance of the 40 Watt so that's perfect if you're in town for something like AthFest.
