I just think it's a case of people searching for something or someone to place the blame on for R.E.M. choosing to disband. Like "society" for instance...
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

You don´t stop doing why you love and was born to do for no reason.

What I really don´t understand is why they said that they are not going to play together again, never. That was strange. They could disband and eventually play a song in 5 years for a benefit concert or something. I thought it was such a strong statement.

They've given plenty of reasons. How about the fans that can't accept that R.E.M. have disbanded and feel a need to place blame elsewhere, such as yourself?

I'm sure they had their own personal reasons they don't want to, and don't have to share with us. But they've been doing the same thing for 31 years. No matter how exciting the job is, it will eventually get old. Their hearts weren't in it anymore I guess. As far as not playing goes though, I feel like they'll just do those out of the blue performances as something like an opening act every 5 or 6 years, sort of like when Bill would occasionally do a few songs with them (The one coming to mind was the Raleigh one I think). Nothing publicized beforehand I don't reckon though. (I am predicting that no matter what anybody says right now in these threads, they'll get flak but we shouldn't fight each other now. It's pointless.)

Driver Nate, it's very different when a band like R.E.M. is your first and foremost as opposed to coming second or third in your personal ranking.  People are passionate about a lot of things.

And I don't understand you, in various occasions you have stated that you like posting on music forums because you like the "discussion". Is your idea of discussion this language where you insult other members and use words like sh**t and motherf****

It's contradictory Driver Nate, that you like music discussion but your idea of discussion is actually very primitive.

I have always felt that this statement, as well as R.E.M. will no longer exist (when the "brand name" will carry on and for instance, the website and twitter feed, as gloriously shown on the final newsletter's front), were not thought through and show how much they still desire to be and will be and, I eventually believe, reunite. They have lied many times before and will continue to do so, for the benefit or not of the public and fandom.

I stepped into mud, thorn... Plus, the Driver has alumni here.

I refuse to take part in any conversation where this vocabulary is employed.

you're right.  i'll try to clean up my language too. it's just so darned difficult - trying to take the high road - not being pulled into the fray.

It´s all right thorn, I was referring to Nate.

Actually, taking the "high road" would mean not derailing the thread.

I reiterate that it's good to see Mike and Peter together again.

Peter Buck and Mike Mills playing together. A rare sight these days.

Indeed nice to see them on stage together again. Very cool!

BTW, is High_Speed_Train and our dear Thornie the same person? The internal little conversations almost indicate that.

Now who's being delusional..?

I'm sorry Sweden, but you have just said a very silly thing.

REM hasn't been a band for many years, it was time.
