(Edge and Bono) also commented on the fact R.E.M. decided to disband in 2011, with the Edge having his doubts they are done for good.
"That really came out of the blue," the Edge said regarding R.E.M.'s announcements, but adding "I'm still thinking to myself that maybe in a few years time they'll do some stuff together "What's the point in breaking up except to be back together again! I'm being selfish, I suppose, I would love to see them doing some more work together."

nah i dont agree here, they are done for good. they wouldnt announce it unless they were 100% sure. i wouldnt be suprised if they did a few songs as a four piece in athens someday but even that is a long stretch as i just dont think michael's heart is in it anymore. he said he didnt like playing live past 40, well he's 52 now so he definitely wont want to now

And thats the difference between r.e.m. and U2 and lots of other bands really
U2 would definitely do a farewell tour if they ever had the guts to call it a day ,imagine the grandstanding opportunities ! and the money!!
..... and I'm not surprised in the slightest that they don't understand r.e.m. disbanding. Of course they dont.

..and here is the prerequisite U2 bashing on Murmurs. Like clockwork. Even after a complementary comment by The Edge.

A lot of people I've spoken to close to the band said they can imagine them reuniting at some stage. I don't really see it personally, but who knows? They don't hate each other, and time can change things.

I tried to read the Bono interview. Apparently one has to purchase some sort of subscription to read stuff on u2.com? Maybe the interview is somewhere else, I just stopped searching after u2.com started selling me the subscription. I'm thankful remhq don't charge their readers.
"But now you're here and it's different, how the light shines in your eyes, and every second a century, it's then that I realized, the world as we know it, a high speed train, we'll pick it up and start again"

Even Eddie Vedder said, they are hanging it up for awhile. Vedder, Bono and the Edge have all spent time with the guys especially Michael. So you know what they must have a good reason to believe they are not done for good, even though they say it now. They said they would never put out a greatest hits, or a live album. Well never say never. I think there were a few others things they did that only a few years before they said they wouldn't.
Look how fast Mike and Peter were on stage together again. I think Michael is maybe going through some kind of phase in his life right now. Hopefully he'll come to really miss what he does best and that is being a front man.
I'm going to listen and to the optimist people of the world.

what does it matter? not everyone likes u2...
i know this has nothing to do with R.E.M. but when Westlife announced their split (yess!!) they announced a huge farewell tour, bigger than any of their normal tours, straight after they said they'd split. what a way to play on fans feelings. its not right at all

Everything is permanent until it isn't, too.

What's actually the source of this quotation? The link didn't help.

Try this link which was posted in another thread.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

They are not coming back as REM. Maybe they will play some songs in a small club with a name like bingo hand job or something. Or only play for themselves.

I think when Stipe gets sick of taking pics of architraves and carpet and realises no one is interested in any of his so called art, that he has just been patronised and indulged because he was a great singer in a great band, he will return to singing because that is the only adult paying job he has ever had.

I don't really get that. I mean It's hardly a crime against humanity is it? If bands wanna do that and fans wanna pay it then so what? If the fans don't like it they don't have to go. Deal with it!

You're an idiot. Quite obvious.
