I had the privilege of getting to hear the band perform 'Moon River' for the last time... Also a few lines of Suzanne, dunno if that would count though.

It was at Ardgillan Castle, Dublin in 2005. I remember Michael started talking about how nice a day it was, and said something along the lines of "look you've even got a full moon", which is when Ken started playing 'Moon River' on the piano as a joke, which made Peter put his arms around Scott and motioned at Ken to keep playing. Michael tried singing it but got as far as the second line and completely forgot the words which was when Mike stepped in and they sang the whole song together, while Peter and Scott were swaying on the stage with their arms around each other. It was probably one of my favourite moments from any R.E.M. show and by the end everyone was in the pisses laughing! :D Definitely the best R.E.M. show I ever attended.

I've pics I took during Moon River from the front row which I will post later on :)

Atlanta 2008 was the last time I heard each and every song in that setlist.

For something rare  I have to give Staring down the Barrel a mention.  One of 2 times the guys played that song on the 08 tour.

no i mean did you witness the last ever performance of any song? like if you were at the mexico city gig you would've heard the last performance of 27 songs as they never played any of those songs again.

Interesting topic! Can't find a single one... I thought it may have been Passenger from Stockholm 98, but they did actually play it once or so in both 99, 2003 and 2005.

On the other hand is say the first performance of Gardening in 13 years (London 99), and of course the first showings of Second Guessing and Letter Never Sent in 21 years and of 1,000,000 in 18 years (all Olympia in 07).

It can be easily done too;

say you go onto www.remtimeline.com and go to the 2003 section, press ctrl+f, type in the name of a song/venue and it will tell you the number of occurences andwhere each one is :)

I was quite surprised I've found this many, considering I'd last seen them in September 2008, so they still had quite a few dates from the tour after those shows.

So here they are:

So. Central Rain (this surprised me the most, being one of their most played songs) - München 23 September 2008
Time After Time - München 23 September 2008
Departure - Zürich 24 September 2008
Airliner - Berlin 16 July 2008 - yeah, they only ever played it once :)

I've also seen them playing 4 songs they only played once more after that (Strange, I'm Not Over You, Swan Swan H, Star 69)
We have many things in common - name three

Good question!
I'm not sure, have to check this, but I believe:
"Just a touch" and "Submarine", Oberhausen 2008
and as I see above:
"Airliner", Berlin 2008
and maybe some more... (Scott singing the Loreley-song ;-) ) ...

I can claim two interesting lasts, both as opening songs: last performance ever of "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" at the beginning of the Jones Beach show and the last time they ever opened a show with "Finest Worksong" in Columbia, MD. I also can claim to seeing them perform songs as opening songs for the only time ever: 2004 NY and "End of the World" and 2005 Ipswich "Everybody Hurts."
Visit my live show trading page at https://sites.google...site/countfeed/.
Shows I have seen: 1995: 6/2 - Chicago; 1999: 8/20 - Tinley Park; 2004: 10/1 - Philadelphia, 10/30 - Atlantic City, 11/ 4 - New York City; 2005: 7/8 - Ipswich, 7/10 - Cardiff; 2008: 6/6 - Chicago, 6/11 - D.C., 6/14 - Jones Beach, 6/18 - Philadelphia, 6/19 - New York City, 6/21 - Atlanta.

That's a pretty cool duo (notwithstanding the reason for EH)!

Well, that's a bit of a technicality I guess... Even if we don't count Supernatural Superious as the same song, as far as I know the name wasn't changed until after the Olympia shows (even though the timeline says differently).

BTS, looking at your post I first thought it was "your" list, which would have been pretty impressive... :P

This is a fun thread. I figured this out for myself a few months ago after they disbanded. I saw the October 24, 2008 show in Grand Prairie, TX. This included the 4th to last "7 Chinese Bros.", the second to last "I've Been High," and the last "Sing for the Submarine" and "Auctioneer." The last one has always been one of my favorites, so I'm happy to have it.

11 March 2009 - Carnegie Hall, New York, NY - E-bow The Letter

Wow , looking at this list , the 2008 tour set lists look as though they were deliberately trying to play as many different songs as poss. That must have taken some rehearsing!
Looks like I saw the last performance of You are the Everything in Atlanta 2003.....nearly a decade ago....crikey that went quickly.

Hey, looking at that again it seems I actually saw the last ever performance of one song. Wolves, Lower in Bergen 2008. Pretty cool actually!

Edit: and apparently also Star 69 (Verona 08) and Letter Never Sent (Olympia 2007)

No tickling the lead singer when he is reaching for a note that he can no longer hit, OK?" JMS, post-audience visit during The One I Love in Bergen, 2008
