Broadcast date Friday 13th January on BBC4 (digital channel) 9.30pm:

R.E.M. at the BBC – archive performances selected from throughout the band’s career, originally recorded for BBC programmes. Songs featured include Losing My Religion, Orange Crush, Pretty Persuasion & Half a World Away. Singer Michael Stipe & bass player Mike Mills also reflect on the band’s decision to finally call it a day last September.

Followed by Later with Jools Holland presents R.E.M. (10.30pm). An edition of the music show from 1998 devoted to R.E.M., who perform tracks from their album Up as well as favourites from their back catalogue

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Excellent, thanks for posting. I'd heard banter about this a few weeks ago, but nothing confirmed. The beeb will have quite a bit of footage kicking around. Also nice of them to do this, marking their passing in a way.
Ahoy!

I guess this i maybe something similar to the BBC Special that aired in 2008, where the guys talk us through "all their BBC performances" from 84 and onwards, but perhaos updated with an added recent interview. Hopefully some will tape and share somewhere.

I can record it, but can probably only transfer it to VHS if this is any good to you?

I have a feeling it's a repeat airing.
It was repeated on ABC here in Australia a couple of weeks back.
That someone just pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand.

I can record it onto DVD so I should be able to put it on Pando--if I can remember what to do! It's been a long time since there was anything new to share..Worst scenario is that I can copy the disc and send to you.
Enjoy yourself with no regrets :D

I don't think it is, that show had peter mike and michael being interviewed whereas this one is just mike and michael. Also it didnt feature any parkinson or jools holland performances whereas this one does. The show you're refering to was pretty much just TOTP performances, an old grey whistle test performance and that was it really. Here's a copy of the tv guide, 2hrs of R.E.M. in total:

(secretly wishing they show some glastonbury!)

BBC4 TV SCHEDULE, 13.1.12 said:

R.E.M. AT THE BBC (21:30):

In September 2011 R.E.M., the rock band from Athens, Georgia, decided to call it a day after 31 years. This collection from the BBC archives includes performances of Pretty Persuasion from the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1984, Orange Crush on Top of the Pops in 1989 and special acoustic versions of Losing My Religion and Half a World Away on The Late Show in 1991, along with performances on Later with Jools Holland and Parkinson. Also, vocalist Michael Stipe and bassist Mike Mills reflect on the band ending.

LATER... WITH JOOLS HOLLAND (R.E.M.) (22:30):
Special edition featuring rock band R.E.M. live in the studio and in conversation with Jools Holland. The band perform songs from their album Up, plus some old favourites.

I was actually at the Jools Holland recording. You might momentarily see a much younger me on screen.
It was brilliant. And it's a really good show. I loved Up.
They did about two retakes after the recording.

This Jools Holland Performance was awesome. Please, can anyone who will hopefully record this share a DVD or so on pando or as a torrent for us?

I've recorded both shows on my DVD recorder. Only problem is that my PC is being repaired at the moment and my husband's netbook does't have a DVD drive. I should have it back mid-week and will put it on Pando next weekend. If I forget please me!!

REM at the BBC oly had one or two things that I hadn't seen before but it was good to see it put together chronologically and see how over the years the band improved and became so much relaxed in front of the cameras. Also a reminder of some very dodgy haircuts and the fun of TOTP!

Robert, like Sue I'm so very envious! I haven't spotted you--is there a single moment you could point me to? Hope you're good!
Enjoy yourself with no regrets :D

It was great to see some of the stuff from the Beeb, Bad Day on Parkinson was really rocking. Joey Wanomaker really was a good drummer too. Why did they change ?

I'm not sure but I think Joey went back to Beck.

The official explanation also mentioned him wanting to move into a few production projects. Not sure of the truth level in that partiular statement.
