What is the rarest and most difficult to find R.E.M songs and recordings or photographs, Video's etc.etc.
I didn't know until recently that they'd peformed Belong on the 1989 tour. Has anyone heard a tape of it? That must be pretty rare.

This Film Is On has a live version of Belonf from the 1989 tour:
Maybe the automatic demos? They're rumoured to have surfaced in some trading circles but have still never seen the light of day. The Reveal demos are pretty rare too

A live performance of Bittersweet Me ranges from pretty rare to inexistent. On most days this is my favorite song (What a great lead single it would have made).

Yeah, I've heard of the Automatic demos, but never actually came into contact with them. One of the famously rare songs is Stephen Hague's mix of Catapult, which, until recently, was almost literally unheard I think. Having no experience embedding videos into a post, I have no idea how to put it in, but I'll put a nice little link:
EDIT: Lo and behold! Well, lots of discoveries are made by accident. It would appear that one simply pastes the link in. The nice little link is now a nice little video.

This has to be the closest that exists to Automatic demos at least in an official, commercial package.

As far as we know, it's inexistent.

I never knew why the band lost interest with Bittersweet Me. I love that song and I thought it could have been great live. The video is pretty good, as well.

A live version from the Green Tour can be found on a Radio Song CD single along with live versions of You Are The Everything and Orange Crush.

That's right. Forgot that it was on there. I've got both the US digi-pack version and the UK W0072CDX. Sounds great live, but somehow identical to the studio version; clocks at 4:08, whereas the studio version is 4:07. At the end you wait for Half A World Away to begin, and you get the crowd cheering.

When it was first debuted, it had an actual vocal melody in the verses (as opposed to the spoken word thing). The orginal vocal line is much better imo - had a swinging kind of lilt to it. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital copy to post (though I may have that version on an old cassette somewhere).

A studio version of Weatherman.
Yeah, I know, chances are they did not even record it. Oh well.

It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

I was recently able to mark a first pressing of the Hibtone version of "Radio Free Europe" b/w "Sitting Still" off of my list. The only time I've ever seen a copy was at Wuxtry but the price (over $600) was far too rich for my blood.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

its sole performance was that dec 2002 vancouver gig, and they were in vancouver recording at the time, right? i'd say it's pretty likely - we'll see what the box reveals.
haha the r.e.m. box set has replaced the neil young archives as a mythical magical release that hardcore fans will likely spend decades waiting for...

If a vocal version of Title was ever recorded in studio or at a rehearsal, that's definitely the holy grail for me.
