Hey Murmursians,

So will our beloved fansite be freezed at the end of this month or will it go on?

I for one will hope and pray that it goes on.

Because I am going to feel quite homeless as a REM fan without murmurs.com

And Peter and Mike are still musically active so who will tell us of their ongoing work if not murmurs.com

Thanks for hearing me whine.

Just wanted to share that with you guys.

Regards,
Shaival

I couldn't agree more.

Not to mention the fact that this is a place to meet and talk to other fans, which I will miss very much if this site will come to an end.

Well, I've now heard that it WILL go on (with Ethan paying for the servers), BUT that it might change from a fan forum into something of an "Index" of all things to do with the band. When and if this takes place, who knows? At least it won't freeze at Dec 31...or so I've been told.

+1 on continuing as is.
I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...

Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...

Since this topic keeps coming up, I hope EThan makes it a "Sticky" thread so people will know but on several occasions recently he's said it will continue beyond December 31st but in order to do so, it's going to require some Murmursians with programming knowledge in order to do so. So far, a few people have stepped forward, including Robert Andrews. You can find more information on that topic in this thread.

EThan also recently confirmed that R.E.M. HQ will continue and that the post office box for the fan club will remain active, even if that means the fan club itself is shutting down.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

It would be great if there still will be a message board as well.

There will be. From what EThan has said it'll be a much more streamlined version of what exists now.

I don't mind the format of the site changing. But I am happy hear so many of you say that murmurs.com will go for sure :)

In a bid to make clear that I think the site should still exist, albeit possibly in a new format, I put forward some personal suggestions at http://www.murmurs.c...about-the-band/

I also hope this site continues.  I'm not exactly the most active poster, but I've been here a long time and would still like to read updates on the guys and would miss seeing posts from some of the long-standing regulars who feel a little bit like extended family.

It'll stay as long as there is someone (or someones) who are willing to step in and really admin it.

As evidenced by my absence: I have no time as of now as I'm starting a new job and have a 2 year old and such.

I'm willing to keep providing the server space.

Ethan, how much time did you typically sink into this endeavor?  I would like to see it continue, and I'm willing to put my time behind that statement.  However, I am guessing that i would need at least one other someone to help me replace you.

I'm interested in Rob's ideas; I had the same instinct when I heard about the break up -- we have to archive everything!  I went out and registered a domain with the idea to augment what you've done here, and what is already at remtimeline and several other irreplaceable sites.  But I'd rather put energy toward an already-established community.

My time is short, too. What is needed, I think, is a proper rethink and adequate technology, more than just admin to keep it ticking over as is.
Perhaps it is worth beginning to formalise a member discussion about what this should look like? ie. What features are appropriate now, who might go on list of people who can help on any technology work?

I agree.  From what Ethan's said it is probably okay to run with that and at least see what ideas come out.  Maybe some screenshots of what murmurs has been, and a list of ideas that have already been voiced would generate some interest in the discussion?
