I've yet to procure a copy for myself but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up for what always turns out to be some of the finest reading and listening I do every year. For those unfamiliar with the Oxford American's annual Southern Music issue, they all come with a Southern Music sampler CD full of songs that were handpicked by the editor. I got hooked back in '99 when they included an alternate version of R.E.M.'s "Why Not Smile?" on the sampler and haven't missed an issue since. As of 2009 they started dedicating the entire issue (and CD) to a state. The first year it was Arkansas, last year it was Alabama, this year it's Mississippi. For more info on the current issue click on the image below.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

They closed down the Borders where I used to buy these. The Arkansas compilation was extraordinary.

If all else fails it can be ordered directly from the Oxford American web site. I ended up finding my copy at Barnes and Noble.

On newsstands now. I haven't missed an issue since the one with the alternate version of "Why Not Smile?" came out back in 1999. By the way, that issue is for sale through the Oxford American website for $100.
