Like I mentioned previously, they play Raleigh pretty often so I go see them nearly every time they pass through here. They released a new album a couple of years ago called Great American Bubble Factory that in my humble estimation, lives up to the best of their previous material. Kevn has said in interviews that they had originally planned to release it back in the early 00s but didn't because the world wasn't ready for their "blue collar optimism". There's also a couple documentaries about them in the works; one is called Great American Band and the other is Scarred But Smarter (life n times of drivin n cryin) though it's entirely possible they may be the same film. Of that, I'm not sure.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I'm gonna check those/that out.   Around 2004 I was thinking of booking a show for Kevn's STARR(?) project, but his manager was cool enough to tell me there was no way they'd fill a room here and gave me passes to a show in NYC. That kind of honesty goes a long way.I remember DNC were huge in Richmond and everywhere south of of there. Is that still the case?

I can't speak for everywhere else but they seem to draw pretty well when they play in Raleigh.

On a somewhat related note, several years back, Kevn took part in what became two pretty historic shows in this area that were billed as Tres Tangled Truckers. The members included Caitlin Cary of Tres Chicas (also formerly of Whiskeytown, currently a member of the Small Ponds), Kevn Kinney (Sun Tangled Angel Revival) and Jason Isbell (at that time he was still a member of the Drive-By Truckers).

Unfortunately, this seems to be another band that far too many R.E.M. fans seem to know next to nothing about. At least going by the lack of response to threads devoted to them here over the years. It was Drivin' n' Cryin' opening for R.E.M. on the Green World Tour that pretty much put them on the map for me. That, and their song "Honeysuckle Blue". Peter Buck has also worked with Kevn Kinney on numerous occasions, most notably on Kevn's MacDougal Blues album which they toured together for back in the early 90s.

This video was shot at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia on November 19, 2011:

I like Drivin' N' Cryin'! It's been a long time since I've seen them live but it was after they opened up for R.E.M.

I've seen a ton of shows at Cat's Cradle when I lived in Carrboro. Too many to name. But I'll try to catch them again when they come through. I never get to make it out to Raleigh that much these days like before.

Cool! I also like Kevn Kinney's Sun Tangled Angel Revival. Wish I had got to catch Kevn when he performed with Violent Femmes back in 2005.
