Unfortunately, this seems to be another band that far too many R.E.M. fans seem to know next to nothing about. At least going by the lack of response to threads devoted to them here over the years. It was Drivin' n' Cryin' opening for R.E.M. on the Green World Tour that pretty much put them on the map for me. That, and their song "Honeysuckle Blue". Peter Buck has also worked with Kevn Kinney on numerous occasions, most notably on Kevn's MacDougal Blues album which they toured together for back in the early 90s.

I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

This is a clip of Kevn and Peter Buck that was filmed for MTV's 120 Minutes back in 1990 when they were on tour in support of Kevn's MacDougal Blues record:

Great band, and Kevin's own work is pretty cool too. Great tribute, pretty impressive "essences of early R.E.M. songs" song, I guess... 
Anyone ready to make a shot at transcribing the lyrics?
As for the other clip, to even imagine MTV played that stuff is as great at it is mind boggling...

I've seen Drivin' n' Cryin' a number of times over the years with the first time being when they opened for R.E.M. I still need to stock up on some of their early albums and I also have a few of Kevn's solo records but need to track down some of his early stuff such as MacDougal Blues. Drivin' n' Cryin' seem to make Raleigh a regular stop on their tours so I've had the pleasure of seeing them several times in the past few years, their concerts are always a blast.

MacDougal Blues is a classic. "Hey, Landlord (Meatloaf and Fishsticks)" is a big favorite of mine.

I'm not sure about that but wasn't Buren R.E.M.'s "auxiliary" guitarist on the Green tour, particularly on the dates when Drivin' n' Cryin' was the opening band?

He may well have, I just seem to have a memory of R.E.M. sometimes using one of the musicians from their opening bands as auxiliary musicians during their own sets throughout the years.

I remember seeing him play on the Pagentry(Richard Thompson did some stuff too) and Work tours,but I only remember Peter Holsapple on the Green tour. That was a long time ago though.

No Buren Fowler as actual extra guitarist in 89 as far as I know. Only Holsapple then. Buren did most of 86 and 87 (far from all songs each show), but famously not the European dates in 87. The story about Peter urging him to switch to DNC has been reported elsewhere, so...I have assumed it is true. Buren's behaviour during shows and on tour has been described as "un-R.E.M.-like", whatever that means, but apparently it included kicking obnoxious audience members in the head or so...
Buren's blue Rickenbacker from those years was sold on eBay a few years ago.
