Hej folks!
When we can't find each other on murmurs.com: Where do you all go? I'm going to feel kind of homeless...
Sad regards.

Not sure that I understand your post entirely but from what I understand, Murmurs is no longer closing down as of December 31st.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

It would be good idea to think on alternative site (maybe something cost-free like a tumblr page or something like that). Unless Ethan clarify to all of us that murmurs.com will remain online for many years.

I don't think anyone could clarify that their site would remain "online for many years" but EThan did recently confirm that Murmurs would continue beyond December 31st of 2011.

How about we have an annual convention in Athens or NYC?

I've forgot you are very literal to the written word.
Even so, it's very easy to be misunderstood. I just wanted to be clear that there are no longer plans for Murmurs to fold up shop as of December 31st, which was previously the plan. At least that is my understanding.

Other fans have this same idea. A friend of mine when we went to Athens for the Listening parties for Part Lies was talking to David Bell from the fanclub and mentioned to him about an R.E.M. fan expo. He thought it was a good idea.

Where was this said? If it's the comment I recall, I thought Ethan was refering to REMHQ when he said the site will continue running...? I could be wrong.
Given a choice I'd rather have HQ continue than murmurs, although the best thing would be if they added a simple messageboard on HQ. I think murmurs has too much history to be inclusive, too many people have left in anger, or disenchantment. So absent a mesageboard section at REMHQ, I think an entirely new fan site would be cool to see. Getting enough people posting regularly enough for it to sustain interest could be challenging with facebook seeming to be most people's preferred way of staying in touch. It's not for me though, so I'll have to rely on postcards or sky writing or something. heh

There never was a plan for murmurs to finish on December 31st. Ethan said the boards would all be froze, meaning that people will be unable to post or create new topics after this point, and that the site, along with all the threads and posts would remain online as a momentum to all that went on here.
As far as I know this is still going ahead

Yes, he did confirm that REMHQ would continue and that the fanclub address would remain active. There are also plans to move forward with a revamped version of Murmurs. Please see my response to thomas08 below.

That's correct, I should have said frozen in time instead of closed down.

Several members have expressed an interest in Murmurs continuing. EThan posted that in so doing, it would require some members to step forward that have some programming ability. To my knowledge, that hasn't happened but Robert Andrews has suggested that Murmurs become a compendium of all things R.E.M. that would incorporate a listing of concerts, albums, YouTube clips, setlists, memorabilia, etc. From my understanding, the message board part of Murmurs would be downsized considerably but it would continue to exist. There's a thread about that here.

Okay, I see a lot confusion on this topic.
Result: No one knows for sure wether murmurs.com will continue after Dec 31st, right?
So will there be a different way to exchange information, opinions, pictures and other stuff in the future? I would be happy to read not just the "frozen topics" but to keep in touch with you and reports about current events.
REM might be history but Peter, Mike and Michael are not. So to get updated about them would be great.

It would be next to impossible to find the post but EThan has said Murmurs will continue beyond December 31st. Perhaps he can chime in to confirm but it's pretty obvious from the thread that Robert Andrews started that Murmurs is most definitely not coming to an end.

Thanks for the clarification, Jonathon - I hadn't looked in that thread, the idea it presents is not something that interests me, I'm interested in a way of staying in touch to hear about future projects that the band members pursue, but I have no interest in picking over, or documenting their history. So REMHQ it is for me, in the hope they post such details. I hope that they have the occasional postcard of Athens randomness from Bertis, I've always enjoyed those.

I've set up an R.E.M forum which I'll try build up bit by bit over time so if anyone wants to help then if this forum closes we can move over to there.http://s11.zetaboard...ime/search/?c=5

A little bit premature maybe. Whatever happens to these boards, and when, has not yet been fully determined. Once it has, then we can see what other options there are, and what interest and volunteers there is. There is no lack other venues already, from Facebook public discussion to Facebook private groups, other exisiting R.E.M. boards etc, etc.
