"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I hope this is the beginning of many Tributes to R.E.M. by Magazines.  The One done by Q http://www.qthemusic.com/  on 2001 after Reveal was released was amazing.

I won't be surprised if sometime soon Rolling Stone, Spin or Q made a good bye special edition for the guys.

Actually, Paste is no longer a print magazine and you have to sign up to subscribe to the online edition. When they went under I was still owed several issues so I got a card in the mail saying I had four free "issues" of the online version. I just read the article (that's all there is, one article) and there's nothing in it that hasn't been said in all of the other interviews Mills and Stipe have done since they've been out promoting Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage. New Musical Express published a special issued devoted to R.E.M. but it's no longer available.

I will say I liked the format of having a music player load with the article so you hear We All Go Back to Where We Belong while you read. That was fun.

It is an interesting question that keeps being posed by the interviews. Take them at their word that they're getting along and could make a 16th album that's as good as Accelerate or Collapse Into Now. Is it worth it to take a shot at doing that if it increased the chances that by album 17, they're burned out or unhappy or facing any of the other outside circumstances they talked about? If any of those negative endings involved ruining their relationships with each other, probably not.

To Bill, Peter, Mike and Michael - Thank you.
