I have really been digging this song lately -- you should check out the Hansa Studios version on YouTube. Live, it comes off even more forceful and,
errrr, "jangly." It's a real classic, right up there Pagaent and Document rockers, don't you think??
THANKS, d.s.

definitely. the hansa video really got me into the song.
the only thing I kind of miss is that screechy muted guitar that comes in at 1:42 on the album track. but yeah, what a rocker!
just image this one live...shame we'll never see that.

"All the Best" should have been on Part Lies... instead of Alligator.
Then remove "Month of Saturdays" and replace it with Drive.
Then... maybe I'll stop there :-)

Idealy, the tracks from Collapse on there would be Discoverer, All the Best and Uberlin.

Initially I was much more into "All The Best" than I was AAAA, but, that has reversed. I love them both, though and suspect that AAAA was included on PART LIES... because it was featured more individually (with the remix that was posted on HQ) than "All The Best," though I'm not sure whether it was an official single or not.

The best song on Collapse Into Now, and one of the best post-berry songs too. Brilliant song in my opinion.

I love that song. It was one of my favorites at first listen. When I hear it I almost get pissed off that I won't get to hear it live. That song would kick some serious butt live.

Agreed.
Definitely one of my favourite songs they've ever done without Bill. It's the only songs on CIN where the lyrics are actually on par with the music, most of the other songs on CIN are lacking lyrically in my opinion

I like the song a lot. It's the one of the few tracks where Stipe sounds on point and not just saying stuff for the sake of filling in the empty spaces. My only complaint is that the Hansa version doesn't sound all that "live" and seems to have been tweaked quite a bit in post-production or overdubs. Same thing goes for all the Hansa tracks. I mean, the band never sound that perfect on stage. Makes me wonder what those those songs would actually sound like in concert, but alas, I guess we'll never know.

I always find myself singing along (quite loudly) to this song. It's extremely... spellbinding I think.
It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

The best moment of this super rocker, to me, is in the middle of the bridge. Just as the chord changes to F (for those who care) and the organ really SWELLS - that has an enormous lift to it. Well written and well performed/produced.

I agree that 'Alligator' should probably be replaced by another CIN song, maybe 'Discoverer', 'All the Best' or 'It Happened Today'.
'All the Best' is currently my favorite R.E.M. song, it just rocks, rocks, rocks.

If this happened I wouldn´t mind buying the compilation.

I think it's the best rocker since the big 3 fast ones on LRP, TD, IB & JAT, except maybe Ignoreland which although a rocker isn't quite in the same vein. It's very much in the vain of those songs but the lyrics aren't as weird and wordy and surreally brilliant esp. with regards to TD & IB.
