"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I'm dying to see this doc. I was lucky enough to see that show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. I had been on the road for weeks, and that was the day after I got home so I was thinking about bailing out on the 3 hour drive to NYC. I'm REALLY glad I didn't.

I made sure to catch the two shows they did at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro last December. Due to the recommendations of some friends, I bought the Radio City/#1 Record two-fer years ago but it took me a while to get into those albums. Even though the focus of the concerts I saw was on Third/Sister Lovers, that really helped to add to my appreciation to all things Big Star and I like them even more now. I think it just took hearing those songs in a live setting to fully appreciate them.

I would have loved to see those shows, I bet they were amazing. I really hope this documentary finally gets released.

In one of the other clips I've posted from the documentary there were a few scenes from the tribute show in NYC but I don't recall seeing anything from the Cat's Cradle concerts. I know they filmed both nights so hopefully something from those will surface.

That would be cool!
The weird thing for me is that I didn't notice a film crew when I saw them in Brooklyn! I was shocked when I saw the long form trailer with all of that footage. I worked in TV for ten years and was with a guy who runs his own small film company. NEITHER of us knew the show was being filmed, and we're usually hyper aware of that stuff. I think if this film ever comes out it's gonna be killer.
