Found this today on YouTube:

One of about 10 times REM ever performed this beautiful song in full before an audience. Hope you enjoy, and thanks to HeidiGretel, who posted it.

QuestIon: Per remtimeline, this concert was streamed live @remhq. Is it available online as a whole?
I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...

Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...

Thank you. One of the strongest songs on "Reveal" in my opinion.

Michael seems quite happy singing it. I wonder why they didn't play that song more often.

It's one of my all-time faves, and I'd've loved for it to have been a single. It's kind of a quiet song, better for a studio, "unplugged" type set rather than for arena rock concerts. That might have something to do with it. In any event, I love it.

Wow.

I love how this gets a whole new feel with Buck's e-bow in the verses, and especially the more upbeat, assertive drumming. At the same time, the drumming makes it sound like "Aftermath" - this is probably what they were going for with that song and ATS in general, but that (as we know) is a whole other discussion.

When the chorus comes around, it sounds amazing. A gospel song if R.E.M. ever wrote one. It was always a Reveal highlight for me.
Buddha was a fat hillbilly who ate dead cats. If I wanted that to be taught to me I'd just move to Alabama.

This makes me all nostalgic.

When Amy and I got married, my mom had sent the band an note requesting they play (of course!).

Bertis sent a note back saying while the band couldn't do that, they could give me a recording of them playing my favorite song. THe CD had the soundcheck of Beat a Drum from Toronto and it was our first dance.

That's neat, Ethan. One day, if fortune smiles on me, I hope to dance with a lovely bride to "Beat a Drum" on my own wedding day.

sciryl, I like the album version better, but this live rendition is awfully nice. Peter made very nice use of the e-bow so often. Waxes my heart nostalgic to think back on how great this band was, how massive their body of accomplishment. Watched several numbers Sunday evening on YouTube of their Stirling Castle gig (in 2003?). A reminder of how great they were live at their best.

Lissy and Fanof, thanks for the links. I'll probably go MP3 first. Cheers, all.

I always loved the Dalkey demo of this song, so elegant and quiet.

The Reveal version disappointed me...but this live version is awesome. :)

I wonder how Reveal would have sounded if the whole record was like the Dalkey demo, The Lifting was also amazing :)

Which one is the Dalkey demo? There's one on YouTube which somewhat different lyrics - is that it? It sounds a lot like the finished product on Reveal. Sorry you don't like the Reveal version - different strokes and all - I love it.

Hmmm. That's the one I'd seen on YouTube. I don't see it as being sharply different from the album version. For me, both are nice, but the album version is crisper and cleaner and I like the lyrics better. Oh well, different people, different impressions.

for me, the stripped down demo better emphasizes the reflective, contemplative quality of the song.  i can still remember how psyched i was to hear the album version after hearing the demo, then being so disappointed.

I'd bet a nickel that, for each of us, our preference has a lot to do with which one we heard first. I heard Dalkey after album version and you vice versa. We'd each bonded with our respective versions by the time we heard the alternative. ...
