Finally we hear from Peter. Somewhat predictably, he sounds the least damning of R.E.M.'s future prospects, and maybe the most disappointed that things have stalled. It is pretty clear at this point that disbanding was not his idea.
Stipe was quite standoffish in this interview. Surly, even. The body of evidence, based on all interviews to date, points to him being the one to set the dominoes in motion, and he sure doesn't want to talk about it here. Which is fine.
This quote from Michael about his bandmates struck me as particularly distanced: "Proximity does not indicate intimacy. Shared history does not indicate a feeling of love or family or anything. I have a shared history with some of my neighbours whose last names I don't know and I couldn't tell you whether they go for roast beef or tofu."
Speaking of distanced, Mills' quote regarding how Bill Berry was informed of the decision to split: "I left a message on his voicemail," Mills says. "I assume he got it, but I never heard back."
Indifference? Not his business? Whatever the case, odd.
We've come a long, long way indeed since Buck/Mills/Berry/Me. Sigh.
Many, if not most, of the reader comments at the end of the article are disheartening.

I think you misunderstood. This interviewer obviously rubbed him up the wrong way and Michael was being a little difficult and was contradicting him by indicating that the bandmates loved each other despite being in each others pockets rather than because of it.

People trying to find someone to place blame on says more about the fans than it does the band.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
