As for the Living Well comment, I would guess it's Keith Richards. Works with the number of letters.
Good call! I remember a Keith Richards quote from a few years back where he called R.E.M.  a "wimpy rock band" or something like that. I'd say it's him.

Love his answer about Peter

Is he Band Dad?

MS: More like a band big brother. He was three years older than me; he knew about music; he knew how to take drugs and not die

It was noted when both Michael and James from the Manic Street Preachers appeared on a Q magazine cover that any bad feeling over that comment must have been sorted out. Nicky has admitted on several occasions how stupid he was to say that. Though, interestingly enough, I remember reading a much more recent interview with him where he slated several bands like Coldplay for jumping on the politics bandwagon, then he said REM claim their album is political (I'm not sure which record he was referring to, maybe ATS) but when he listened to it it was the most 'vague' politics he'd ever heard of, something like that anyway! Oasis are definitely the 'britpop' band Michael has commented on in the past (every time I hear the word 'Supersonic' in The Wake-Up Bomb, cause that's the name of Oasis' first single!). Though saying they only wrote 4 good songs is being just as ignorant as those who slate REM. Everyone has their moments of flippantly writing off artists they don't like.
I had no idea that was about Oasis. There's other clues in there. He mentions Teach the world to sing which Oasis ripped off for their song Shakermaker, they also ripped off a T-REx song for C&A.

Welliwonder: Oasis supported REM on one date during the 1995 tour. I don't think that particularly means REM were fans of Oasis. It was, to my knowledge, that massive Milton Keynes show (which was broadcast live around the world) rendering it more like a festival show than an individual REM show.

I wouldn't look into that slot too much. I still think it's Oasis (despite the fact a few years ago Noel commenting how great Peter was as a person)
and let's not forget Oasis ripped off R.E.M's riff from Finest worksong/Turn you inside out/Discoverer :D

You had no idea WHAT was about Oasis? As for the line note comment, it is not about any specific band as pointed out in this very thread. As for Wakeup Bomb, JMS has explicitly denied it was any form of sneer at Oasis.

I'm pretty sure it's not about Oasis, I seem to remember Stipe denying it at the time. I think it's supposed to be about glam rock. The supersonic reference is just coincidence I think. Either way, it's one of my least favourite R.E.M. songs. From one of my favourite R.E.M. albums.

And they ripped of the riff from The One I Love on Morning Glory!

Anyone ever seen this?

Yes , seen it before , and Oasis are always being trashed for ripping off someone else . I think both the One I Love and Whats the Story are both great songs and I really don't find myself getting confused which is which ?!? Funny how for some its 'inspired by' and others its 'ripped off'

For a really great Oasis mashup check this out

Of course its Oasis.  Michael agreed years ago that they were pompous asses.  I remember reading that Oasis was a support act  them once and R.E.M. decided they didn't want them as support anymore.

What the hell are people talking about here? The liner notes? They're obviously about the genre in general, not any specific band. Wakeup Bomb, which the band has publically denied was any kind of attack on Oasis?

The only time Oasis was "support act" for R.E.M. was for a few festivals in '95, so R.E.M. never even picked them as support act to begin with, and after '95 Oasis were to big to support anyone anyway.

What's up with you people...?

Oasis supported N.Young in Paris on one of their last tours.

This cracked me up, too, and his citing Peter as a mentor reminded me of another discussion I've had here recently, about how influential Peter in particular was/is for a lot of us--I cannot count how many musicians and authors I discovered because of him. It's interesting to me how he's "mentored" fans in the same way he was a mentor to the band.

I agree that Morning Glory is a great song, it's probably my favourite Oasis song. And aside from the riff similarity it doesn't really sound like The One I Love at all. I think that they were certainly a band who were 'inspired by' many others though! :)

I don't remember him ever saying this, but I do remember him categorically denying that Wake-Up Bomb was about Oasis.

Technically the Slane Castle gig on the Monster tour was an R.E.M. show, albeit one with lots of support bands. Oasis were one of them. But yeah, it seems clear to me that he's referencing Britpop in general, and not anyone specific, in the liner notes. And Wake-Up Bomb is absolutely not about Oasis. That would seem obvious to me even if they hadn't denied it at the time...

Michael agreed when Jon Stewart asked him if Oasis seemed like pompous asses and said they were bone heads 12 years ago right here.

Watch the video.  No its because of the mystery English people Michael does not like.

Some people do not like Oasis, that's the way it is.

Yeah I don't care for celebrities who do nothing but talk shit about everyone else.  Noel Gallagher says nothing but crap about everyone. He has room to talk. It should be no surprise that people are not going to like a band who have assholes as members.

Talking of celebs talking shit about others , isn't your point that Michael is slagging Oasis?  I've certainly never heard a case of the other way round and I bet you havent either.
What did Noel Gallagher ever say that pissed you off so much anyway?
