See what R.E.M. started...

'If we don't come up with a good reason to make a new album, we should just fuck off' (The Irish Times)

Is It Time For U2 To Call It A Day? (The Guardian)
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
- Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids

I wasn't kidding when I said I wondered if R.E.M. were going to start a trend with their "calling it a day" announcement.

I don't think U2 will end (they still sell out massive stadiums even if their current catalog isn't on par with their back catalog), but I know they were one of the bands that were name checked online when R.E.M. decided to retire, along with Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Rolling Stones.

And I'll repeat it again, that my boyfriend is a huge Madonna fan, and he thinks she should do the smart thing and just retire at this point. (She's actually playing the Super Bowl next year to try for some big "comeback"... :o ) but he believes her creative peak is well behind her.

I agree!  I would certainly not be at a loss if U2 were to call it a day.

Sad for the fans though!

More overrated than U2?, The Rolling Stones.
In 1984 Orwell writes of a nation that constantly under attack with a undescribed enemy, as such causing permanent anxiousness in the population a constance of fear of the outside and a justification for both the suppression of people and increased governmetal control and military spending. The genius of the unidentified enemy is the need for this never to end.

If you mean The Rolling Stones post Sticky Fingers, I agree.

As for U2, I never cared for them but if they really are quitting I empathise with their fans. We all know how this feels.

It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

I would say 'tattoo You' was their last good record.  I certainly love early Stones.

I agree... I hate their "stadium rock" and Bono's voice...
It's time to quit... Coldplay have become the new U2 and doesn't means that is good...

i hope they don't. i hope they will make music in so ridiculous way as they did in the last 18 years........seriously, their last decent album is Zooropa.

and...i've never thought about that...they have released just 13 albums...and since Zooropa, so in the last 18 years they have made rubbish.

There's really no comparison between R.E.M. discography and the U2 discography....and especially in the 90s...isn't it?? first of all because R.E.M released more albums and secondly if we would make a comparison with the albums of the last 15 years there's no match!!!

i really don't know why they are so overrated...

so after that....please leave us!

U2 made plenty of good stuff. I know there's this whole rivalry thing going on, but try looking at it without your R.E.M. fan glasses and you'll see a band with quite a, uhm, legacy, whose best years are way in the rearview mirror, like so many others.

Once again, it's useless to argue over taste. Personally I think the Rolling Stones made 2.333333 songs, which they recycled for the past decades... But like I said, arguing over taste is pointless.

of course they did. but until Zooropa. ok, maybe it's just my opinion...but i think it's nearly the truth. talking about an overrated band... that said U2 still are a great band, err..they were great and i listened to them a lot in my life.

That U2 vs. R.E.M. thing still lingers (only from the R.E.M. fan side, U2 fans don't seem to have a problem with R.E.M.).  I never got it.

Probably because people feel that R.E.M. should have gotten the same recognition as U2, so there's a touch of jealousy involved. U2 was considered, I think, for most of their shared time in the spotlight, the best band in the world.

U2 are my generation's Rolling Stones.  Artistically irrelevant for some time now -  they only exist to make hundreds of millions of dollars from tours. Nothing wrong about making so many people happy by going that. But a little more humility and perspective from the band would be nice.

By the way U2 fans are being asked to shell out $125 to get all the new, old material that comes with the "Achtung Baby" re-issue. How much money do U2 feel they need to make off their fans? That's simply shocking.

I really respected what Mike and Michael said that a farewell tour would be too mercenary to do.

Oddly, I just recently picked up No Line on the Horizon, after seeing Guggenheim's Achtung Baby documentary on youtube.  I have all their albums, but i'm not really much of a U2 fan.  they're a band whose music i appreciate but he never really struck any personal chords.  that said,  I'm actually a big fan of How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, which i think is one of their best, most consistent albums (definitely prefer it to Achtung Baby for instance).  But i know i'm in a minority on that one.
I wouldn't really be sad if they broke up, but i actually wouldn't mind if they continued.  They aren't many bands that have been around for 30+ years with all original members.  I also think they they should try to scale themselves back...
I understand that in someways bands are fragile things.  I just wish there could be more continuously active bands who can continue to put out music they give a shit about into their old age, a la Neil Young

I'm a huge Stones fan...and can say Steel Wheels, Bridges to Babylon and A Bigger Bang are their last few records, and fine ones at that.

Unlike some others who had named the Rolling Stones online when R.E.M. hung it up, I do not agree the Stones should hang it up as they still remain a vital and exciting live band ie. their Shine a Light concert film from a few years back.

I'm sooooo okay with their decision after watching their recent interviews.

U2 are just fine, and they are hardly "overrated". "Overrated" is junk like Lady Gaga and Coldplay (sorry to any Coldplay fans but they stink!!). I actually think No Line on the Horizon is a fine record. I love both Magnificent and Breathe, although that Get On Your Boots is an atrocity.

I've been over u2 a long time now.    U2 is like a hot woman you may have dated and were in love with at 1 time.   You broke up, but not quite enemies.   Still talk and greet each other civilly in public.     REM is the woman.   REM  is your wife.  REM is your life.
