"after nearly 30 years together"?
The BBC should check their facts a little better...

Maybe what they meant was nearly 32 years together.
Well I can't wait to listen. The interviews I prefer right from the horses mouth. I guess I got my wish that someone other than Mike would say something.

I think they just looked at the name of the compilation (which in that sense is a bit unfortunate).
Will be interesting to hear. Obviously it would be great if anyone could record it for us who may miss it (webcast notwithsnading).

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

For those that missed it, it looks like it'll be archived as a podcast here:

Also, it would be nice if this thread could be merged with this one so there's not two threads for the exact same topic.

I think these were the key comments from the Simon Mayo interview;
'written all over collapse into now , including the wave on the cover signalling goodbye , from the first note to the last note on the record , is our disbanding ' - Michael
Will you continue in music ? 'I'm taking an extended break after 31 years , I'm not being mysterious , i really don't know what I want to do'- Michael
Have you done your last show together? ' Yes , its done'- Michael and Mike together without hesitation
'The Berlin Hansa live videos were performed knowing we would never play the Collapse songs live and were the last live performances we did'- Michael
Your not tempted to do a farewell show? NO!- Michael
'theres no way of wrapping it up with one show, we'd have to do a tour and thats not something we wanted to do' - Mike
' I just didn't want that feeling of this is the last time I'll sing Man On The Moon' in Japan or Supernatural SuperSerious in London or whatever'...........- Michael
'A farewell tour would be a bit mercenary and that's not who we are'- Mike
'We're wholly at peace with the decision to disband'- Mike
Great interview , Simon Mayo is an excellent broadcaster ( and has great taste in music too!)

Good for them. Like its no big deal. I wonder if the Staff are at peace by the fact they won't have a job soon? This is the saddest for the staff and the fans. Mike and Michael sound so insensitive.

C'mon... They have gone on record talking about how the announcement was delayed even after the final decision was made over the summer, to sort of out stuff for their employees etc. The quote then was along the lines of "this is something which will affect a lot of pople, you know. We have employees in our office etc."
What else do you expect them to do? Stay toghether so their office stay kan keep their jobs?
I am confident none of their employees have any concerns with the decision or how they have been treated, much less how Mike or Michael express themselves in interviews. By what right do you then express any concerns for them?
Where does these utterly insane views of the band, their decision to disband, and what is means to be fan of R.E.M. come from? I am completely baffled.

I know they have always treated their staff with respect. You're right. I don't know where that came from.

It was nice to see Mike and Michael and I have to say it seemed a bit unusual to see them featuring on Newsnight after the stable door's closed.
On a side note as far as the whole closing the Fan Club debate goes - I can't personally see why they had to close... couldn't they have rejigged as the R.E.M. Appreciation Club.
