Feeling Gravitys Pull

I fell asleep and read just about every paragraph.

Read the scene where gravity is pulling me around
Peel back the mountains peel back the sky
Stomp gravity into the floor
It's a Man Ray kind of sky
Let me show you what I can do with it
Time and distance are out of place here

Step up, step up, step up the sky is open-armed
When the light is mine, I felt gravity pull

Somewhere near the end it said
"You can't do this", I said "I can too"
Shift swaying rivers shift, oceans fall and mountains drift
It's a Man Ray kind of sky
Let me show you what I can do with it

Step up, step up, step up the sky is open-armed
When the light is mine, I felt gravity pull into my arms (in my arms)
Pulling me by eye strain (looking down)
This is the easiest task I've ever had to do...

I fell asleep and read just about every paragraph

Read the scene where gravity is pulling me around
Shift the swaying river's shift
Oceans fall and mountains drift
It's a Man Ray kind of sky
Let me show you what I can do with it
Time and distance are out of place here

Step up, step up, step up the sky is open-armed
When the light is mine, I felt gravity pull into my arms (in my arms)
Pulling me by eye strain (looking down)
This is the easiest task I've ever had to do...

Reason had harnessed the tame
Holding the sky in your arms
Gravity pulls me in

Maps And Legends

He's not to be reached, he's to be reached.
He's not to be reached, he's to be reached.

Called the fool in company,
On his own where he'd rather be.
Where he ought to be, he sees what you can't see, can't you see that?

Maybe he's caught in the legend (maps and legends)
Maybe he's caught in the mood (maps and legends)
Maybe these maps and legends (maps and legends)
Have been misunderstood (maps and legends)

Down the way the road's divided,
Name me the places you have seen
Those who know what I don't know
Refer to the yellow, red and green
(can’t you see)

Maybe he's caught in the legend (maps and legends)
Maybe he's caught in the mood (maps and legends)
Maybe these maps and legends (maps and legends)
Have been misunderstood (maps and legends)

He's not to be reached, he's to be reached.  (maps and legends) x 4

The map that you painted didn't seem real.
He just sings whatever he's seen
Point to the legend, point to the east,
Point to the yellow, red and green

Maybe he's caught in the legend (maps and legends)
Maybe he's caught in the mood (maps and legends)
Maybe these maps and legends (maps and legends)
Have been misunderstood (maps and legends)
Been misunderstoon

(Maps and legends) Is he to be reached?  He's not to be reached.
(Maps and legends) Is he to be reached?  He's not to be reached.
(Maps and legends) Is he to be reached?  He's not to be reached anymore.

Driver 8

The walls we built up, stone by stone,
The fields divided one by one
And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We've been on this shift too long"

And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We can reach our destination, still a ways away" (but it’s still a ways away)

I saw a treehouse on the outskirts of the farm.
The power lines have floaters so the airplanes won't get snagged.
The bells are ringing through the town again,
Children look up, all they hear is sky-blue, bells ringing

And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We can reach our destination, still a ways away" (but it’s still a ways away)
But we’re still a ways away" (but it’s still a ways away)

The way to see, the way to eat
The way to put myself to sleep
The way to see, the way to eat
The way to put myself, my children to sleep

We piloted this song in a plane like that one.
She is selling faith on the Go Tell crusade.
Locomotive 8, Southern Crescent, hear the bells ring again.
Field of wheat is lookin' thin

And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We've been on this shift too long."
And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We can reach our destination, still a ways away" (but it’s still a ways away)
But it’s still a ways away (but it’s still a ways away)

yeah I just re-listened to Driver 8 and "the way to see the way to eat" is really "the way to shield the hated heat."

Sorry, I will never, ever buy that the lyrics are "hated heat".  Ever.  Listen to the demo from he deluxe edition.  Okay, he does enunciate "eat" in a way that sounds like "heat", but lyrically, that makes next to no sense.  Listen again to the demo.  At best, it could be "The way see, the way to heat".  Sorry.  It's "eat" in my mind.  Granted, on the 2008 tour, Stipe was reading from lyric sheets on the internet and sang incorrect lyrics for some songs, simply because he was singing what was on the sheet.  The point of these posts isn't so much to convince everyone that I have all the correct lyrics.  When all is said and done, I would expect anyone that cares to assemble all the lyrics into one document will make the changes that sound best to you personally.  Please, watch this and tell me that it's not, at the very least, "the way to see, the way to..."

Read his lips!  The only discrepancy for me would be eat/heat, and heat makes no sense, whereas eat makes total sense.

no it's super clear that it's the way to shield the hated heat, even in the vid you just posted.  He kinda goes there in the vid above
"the way to shield the haaaaa tedheat" though, but it's def. hated heat.  Of all the confusing lyrics Micheal has done, this is not one of them, it's not even mumbled to me.  It's hated heat.  My philosophy is to not even get involved when he mumbles, I don't care. But when he clearly is saying something, like here, he is having an intention to convey those lyrics and then I care, he clearly means to convey "the way to shield the hated heat."

Same issue here with the "accurate" label, I think... There's no way in hell it's "The way to see, the way to eat", unless he had a very bad lisp around that time. On the other hand I'm not convinved it's "the way to shield the hated head" and this just shows that there will never be any "accurate" lyrics.

As for the video, you are aware it's playback, right? This is not the '85 German TV performance wehere he sang live vocals to a backing tape.

My point is, you can see his mouth his mouth form "way to see, the way to..."  On the second "way", his lips close to make a "w" sound, as opposed to opened mouth to form "hated".  Again, I never meant for these to be taken as "accurate".  Maybe someday, when the IRS albums have been transcribed here, they might find their way to Michael and there's a better chance that he might look over the bolded words and provide feedback.  That's the best case scenario.  Look around on the internet.  Is there a better, more accurate collection?  No.  I think people are accepting "hated heat" as gospel because it was one of the first guesses at that lyrics, and people have been singing along to it for so long, they don't look for an alternate.  I always expected for there to be dissenting views, and that's actually the way I wanted it.  I know that I don't know all the lyrics, but I thought this would be the best place to hash them out.  I will never say "I'm right, you're all wrong".  All I can do is pull up demos and live version and look for better sources.  All of your input means the world to me.  I'll certainly need it when I get to Kahoutek!  The Dublin version offers little help, since I think he was just reading off an internet lyric sheet.  At least we have the demo now.

If we didn't have the handwritten lyric sheet for Sitting Still, do think for a second that Michael would cop to the lyric "C could stop stop it well read"?  His reluctance to release lyrics is most likely embarrassment for his early work.  When his lyric writing improved, they started including lyric sheets.  This just happens to be a hobby of mine that I've been obsessing over for 25 years.  I haven't read every interview.  Perhaps in one interview, someone asked him about the bridge to Driver 8 and he gave the lyric in an interview.  That's why I'm doing this as a newsgroup discussion as opposed to just making a website and posting my version of the lyrics.  I need your help.  All of you!

I can't see that, but more importantly there is no 's' sound being sung... It's a 'sh' sound. Are you going by the sudden lisp theory?

Fine.  The MTV 120 Minutes acoustic performance.  1:40 time maker.  The WAY to see the WAY to eat.  It doesn't even sound remotely like "heat" hear, and to my ears, it is absolutely "way", not "hated".  It appears we'll not come to an agreement on this, but in every performance I've seen from the mid-80's, I feel my interpretation stands up pretty well.  Regarding the "sh" sound, I think it's just his way of enunciating.  I suppose it could be "the way to she the way to eat", but that makes less sense.

I guess I see Driver 8 as straightforward.  never been a question, and I thought those were the lyrics before I ever read them anywhere.  Like I said I try not to worry about those lyrics I can't understand...I think sometimes they are mixed low on purpose to not be clear in those times when Michael just wanted it to be part of a whole and not taken as a separate thing, and even other times when the vocal stood out the point was still to focus on the emotion like another instrument not the words.  But Driver 8 isn't like that, it's simple, straightforward, and I don't' think Michael is hiding his lyrics at all, which is the reason I am saying what I am saying.  But I guess the fact that people can disagree is what makes R.E.M. such a great band...but...on the other hand...I am saying I heard "the way to shield the hated heat" before I ever read anyone else say that.

I guess my question is, did you listen to the album for the first time and interpret it as "shield the hated heat" or did you read it long ago and and been singing along with it like that ever since.  Some people though the "we could gather, throw a fit" was "we could gather, throw up beer" and are convinced that's the right lyric because they've been singing along as that lyric all these years.  But I digress.  This is just flogging a dead horse.  We agree to disagree.  On with the next batch of lyrics.  And yeah, I am listening to 2 or three different versions of each song as I transcribe them, which is why I'm not posting them all at once.  I'm not doing these from memory or anything.

OK LOL that last video you posted is strange.  He kinda goes "the way to sheel the wayadeeeeeeeee" like he isn't even saying words after "the way." (it IS a sh sound though so def. not "the way to see"...)   May this IS one line he wasn't sure about in a song where the rest was pretty steady.  I still think it's a pretty straighforward song.  However I think it's pretty clear on the album version and the first vid you posted, but maybe he did feel like changing that line around in some live performances.  I will give you that last vid you posted.  I still say it's "the way to shield the hated heat" on the album version and the vid you just posted is not "the way to see the way to eat" though.

i'm in the "hated heat" camp. i will accept that it's NOT that, but it's definitely not "the way to see, the way to eat"

Life And How To Live It

Burn bright through the night, two pockets lead the way
Two doors to go between the wall was raised today
Two doors the names before your others and your own
Keep these books well stocked away and take your happy home.

My carpenter's out and running about, talking to the street
My pockets are out and running about
Barking in the street to tell what I have hidden there

Burn bright through the night, two pockets lead the way
Two doors to go between the wall was raised today
Raise the walls and shout its flaws, a carpenter should rest
So that when you tire of one side the other serves you best

My carpenter's out and running about, talking to the street
My pockets are out and running about
Barking in the street to tell what I have hidden there

You hear is rain, you hear the words in time
Listen to the holler, listen to my walls within my tongue
Can't you see when my ears go tin?
the air quicken tension building inference and suddenly
Life and how to live it

Raise the walls and shout its flaws, a carpenter should rest
So that when you tire of one side the other serves you best
Read about the wisdom all is, a knock, a knock, a knock
It’s a secret knock, one hammer's locked, the other wisdom lost

My carpenter's out and running about, talking to the street
My pockets are out and running about
Barking in the street to tell what I have hidden there
My carpenter's out and running about, barking in the, listen to the holler
Pockets are out and running about
Barking in the street to tell what I have hidden there

Listen, listen to the holler,
If you’re gonna write a book it will be called "Life and How to Live It"

Old Man Kensey

Old Man Kensey wants to be a sign painter
First he's got to learn to read
He's gonna be a clown on TV
Flags at his elbow, time to breathe
(If that's my folly) I believe
Drink up the lake Kensey's awake
(If that's my folly) That's my mistake

Old Man Kensey wants to be a goalie
First he's got to learn to count
He's gonna be a clown on a circus mount
Letters to him signed in sopped-up tar (If that’s my folly)
Kensey is going far
Chop hill and dead, stand on your head
(If that's my folly) I'm ready to go

Nobody sings a chant like you do

Old Man Kensey, he wants to be a dog catcher
First he's got to learn to stand
He's gonna be a clown in a marching band
Letters to him signed ransom greed
(If that's my folly) I believe
Drink up the lake, chop hill and dead
(If that's my folly) That's my mistake
Kensey's awake, stand on your head
(If that's my folly) I'm ready to go
Drink up the lake, stand on your head
(If that's my folly) I'm ready to go

I realize that there's a lot of people that probably hear "John, Bill and Ed" instead of "Chop hill and dead", but I hear "chop" and "dead" when I listen to it.

Re: Driver 8, I've always been in the "shield the hated heat" camp, but like Blue Mookie says that's probably cos I'd read that somewhere years ago. I thnk there's something funny about the way he enunciates "shield" though. Maybe it's: "a way to eschew the hated heat..."?

Can’t Get There From Here

When the world is a monster
Bad to swallow you whole
Kick the clay that holds the teeth in
Throw your trolls out the door

If you're needing inspiration
Philomath is where I go by dawn
Lawyer Jeff he knows the lowdown
He's mighty bad to visit home

(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
I've been there I know the way

When your hands are feeling empty
Stick head jumpin off the ground, 'round
Tris is sure to shirr the deers out
Brother Ray can sing my song

(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
I've been there I know the way

Hands down, Calechee bound
Landlocked kiss the ground
Dirt of seven continents going round and round
Go on ahead Mr. Citywide hypnotized, suit and tied
Gentlemen, testify

If your world is a monster
Bad to swallow you whole
Philomath they know the lowdown
Throw your trolls out the door

(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
(I've been there I know the way) Can't get there from here
I've been there I know the way

Thank you, Ray.
