This isn't from a show I saw but considering how rare footage from the Pagentry tour supposedly is, I thought this was worth posting here. The footage is raw and none of the songs are complete but at least it provides a glimpse into just how good that tour was. I'll never forget the stage set up, Mills' vest, Buck's leaps and Stipe's long cloak and top hat. Glad to see all of that captured in these raw images. I'm not sure if this has ever been seen before as it looks like it was only recently uploaded to YouTube.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

**Edited to add: Evidently I still haven't learned how to successfully upload a clip from YouTube since the most recent upgrade to the board.

Wow, thanks. I have never seen video footage from this tour before.

I guess I've seen them 7 times (8 for Donna because she saw an extra Atlanta show in 1999).  Seems like more for some reason.  I have to say my favorite was Albuquerque Nov 2004 because Mike, Scott, Ken S, and all of Five Eight ended up coming over to my house afterwards and partied into the wee hours.  But others were pretty good too.

4 November 1995 - Desert Sky, Phoenix, AZ
   support: Luscious Jackson

15 August 1999 - Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver, CO
   support: Mercury Rev
(met Dave, Lisa, Ethan, and Melora)

30 August 1999 - Chastain Park Amphitheatre, Atlanta, GA
   support: Wilco
   (met many more murmurs people)

13 September 2003 - Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver, CO
   support: Wilco, Ed Harcourt

15 October 2004 - Greek Amphitheatre, Berkeley, CA
   support: Five Eight

28 November 2004 - Kiva Auditorium, Albuquerque, NM
   support: Five Eight

3 June 2008 - Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver, CO
   support: Modest Mouse, The National

I love Luscious Jackson, Mercury Rev, Wilco, and Modest Mouse - cool variety of opening acts.  and way cool about getting to party with Mike, Scott, and Ken at your house!

for me...as i have on my signature, i've seen them live 21 times.

Can't say which was the best. Each night was a brillant and magic night but of course i can't forget the first time...in Bologna 1999. This really was a fuckin' great rock concert. The crowd was totally crazy...just great.

Another show i have in my heart is the Hyde Park because they played E-Bow The Letter and of course i can't forget the spectacular 4 nights i spent at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin...

27 July 1995 - Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, Scotland

The legendary summer of '95... 17 years old, T in the Park, Oasis in a tent by the beach in Ayrshire, and R.E.M. live for the first time. My main memory of this gig is a really hot girl in the queue saying she liked my Everbody Hurts t-shirt. This was Michael Stipe's, "Here's another song..." phase, maybe that's why it doesn't stick in my head too much. Maybe it's because I wasn't that close to the front. I remember loving it though. And Belly and Spearhead were amazing.

Probably my favourite R.E.M. concert experience. I think they were better on the Accelerate tour, but 1999 wasn't a particularly happy time in my life and Up and New Adventures in Hi-Fi are/were my two favourite albums so hearing so many songs from those two was amazing. Particularly things like Low Desert and How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us. It was also the first time I'd seen them where they pulled out some real chestnuts like Pilgrimage, Driver 8 and Cuyahoga. Songs that they'd very rarely, if ever, played since the 80s. During Pilgrimage I was the only person I could see that was singing along. I caught Peter Buck's eye and he did a kind of nod/smile thing at me. I also caught the lyric sheet to The One I Love on the third night. It bounced off a very bald head in front of me and straight into my hands. Sweet. I remember how fantastic a lot of the songs were live. Songs that I'd never really paid that much attention to before were suddenly transformed into something else. Things like Sweetness Follows, Low Desert, and a lot of the songs on Up. And it was also the first time I heard The Great Beyond. By the third night I was certain it was going to be an R.E.M. classic. And it was.

14 June 2005 - Glasgow Green, Glasgow, Scotland
set: I Took Tour Name / What's The Frequency, Kenneth? / Animal / The One I Love / The Outsiders / Drive / High Speed Train / Bad Day / Leaving New York / Everybody Hurts / Electron Blue / Electrolite / Me In Honey / I Wanted To Be Wrong / Orange Crush / Walk Unafraid / Losing My Religion
encore: Imitation Of Life / The Great Beyond / So. Central Rain / I've Been High / Country Feedback / I'm Gonna DJ / Man On The Moon
Got there very early and stood in the drizzle for hours. I remember being really envious of the fan club members getting in first. (Why I never joined the fan club I'll never know. Madness.) A fairly standard set for that tour. Me In Honey was a nice surprise. And I loved Stipe's vocal delivery on I Took Your Name during this tour. Normally the shouty thing that he did ruined songs for me (So Fast So Numb in particular), but I Took Your Name is one where it really worked. Hands down R.E.M.'s best opener as far as I'm concerned.

18 June 2005 - Balloch Castle Country Park, Loch Lomond, Scotland
set: I Took Your Name / Bad Day / What's The Frequency, Kenneth? / The One I Love / Wanderlust / Drive / The Outsiders / Cuyahoga / Animal / Leaving New York / Everybody Hurts / Electron Blue / Electrolite / So Fast, So Numb / Final Straw / Orange Crush / Walk Unafraid / Losing My Religion
encore: Imitation Of Life / The Great Beyond / Star 69 / Find The River / I'm Gonna DJ / Man On The Moon
Another fairly standard set. I think at the time I was slightly disappointed about the sets for the Scottish gigs on this tour. They only did two Scottish shows, a few days apart, and the sets were very similar. Still, I enjoyed both shows. This one would become the band's last Scottish gig ever (apart from T in the Park in 2008). It was ruined slightly by the morons who were throwing bottles on to the stage near the start. Stipe didn't seem to mind that much but Buck and Mills were fuming. After a couple of songs Buck said something to Stipe and he asked the crowd to stop throwing things onstage.

encore: Supernatural Superserious / Losing My Religion / Mr. Richards / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) / Man On The Moon

25 August 2008 - Cardiff International Arena, Cardiff, Wales
set: Living Well Is The Best Revenge / These Days / What's The Frequency, Kenneth? / Exhuming McCarthy / Drive / Man-Sized Wreath / Harborcoat / Ignoreland / Bad Day / Pilgrimage / Hollow Man / Driver 8 / Electrolite / New Test Leper / I'm Gonna DJ / The Great Beyond / The One I Love / Sweetness Follows / Let Me In / Horse To Water / Orange Crush / Imitation Of Life
encore: Supernatural Superserious / Losing My Religion / Country Feedback / Disturbance At The Heron House / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) / Man On The Moon

27 August 2008 - Rosebowl, Southampton, England
set: Bad Day / Living Well Is The Best Revenge / What's the Frequency, Kenneth? / Fall On Me / Drive / Man-Sized Wreath / Begin The Begin / Hollow Man / The Great Beyond / Ignoreland / Animal / Electrolite / I'm Gonna DJ / Pretty Persuasion / The One I Love / Seven Chinese Brothers / Nightswimming / Let Me In / Auctioneer (Another Engine) / Horse To Water / Orange Crush / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
encore: Supernatural Superserious / Losing My Religion / Imitation Of Life / Man On The Moon
As they didn't do any stand alone gigs in Scotland in 2008, I decided to go to a few South of the border. It was a good decision. I have so many good memories of moments during these shows. I think the Manchester gig was their best performance of the three, though it was the most standard set. They were on fire. Hearing These Days live for the first time was special. Ignoreland was amazing. The Cardiff show had probably the best setlist of the three. Hearing Stipe introduce one of my favourite songs with a simple, "This is called Harborcoat..." still sends chills down my spine when I think about it. 40 different songs over three nights. Three consecutive gigs was definitely the way to go. I'd never seen Stipe so chatty, smiley and relaxed before. And the band had never been better.

I also had tickets to see them at the SECC in Glasgow in 1995 and 2005. The first was cancelled because of Bill Berry's aneurysm (and never re-scheduled). The second was cancelled because of Mills' ear infection. It was re-scheduled for a big tent at Glasgow Green later in the summer. They were never destined to play the SECC. Probably for the best...

Live Performance is what I will miss the most.  There is no else live that gives me the sense of joy as R.E.M.  The concert world will be empty without them.

My second major concert after Pink Floyd in 94. Radiohead opened, I had previously only heard Creep. Before R.E.M. went on, my cousin and I left our cheap seats and fpund some empty seats in the sponsors’ section.  I remember the video for I don’t sleep, I dream and the image of THREE guitarists. Owning only Green, OOT, AFTP, Monster and The best of, I was lucky to only hear known songs (except for the new ones). We shouted ”Fuck off” at the ”Fuck all”-moment in Country Feedback. Let me in and Fall on me were very powerful.

Won tickets incl. ”Meet and greet” through a radio show. Had to travel by plane and then overnight bus with the other winners. Was shaken awake in the middle of the night and to sing Daysleeper for broadcast on national radio... Bought Up limited edition in Stockholm. Small venue, about 500 people. Recorded for TV and radio. LMR was a surprise opener. Remember  thinking ”only ONE electric guirtar on stage!?”. Touched JMS’hand during ”Yeahyeahyeahyeah” in MOTM. JMS played guitar on I’m not over you. Great guitar solo on Country feedback. RFE (first encore) consisted of first verse over and over. Met JMS and MM after the show and they signed my newly bought Up lim ed. JMS asked if he could keep my pen. He could. I also got some pictures.

22. The Great Beyond
23. I'm Gonna DJ
24. Man on the Moon

Support by The Thrills, very nice. PB guested on one song. Talked to a guy who had come just to see them. A bit ”quiet” soundwise, so the singing guy next to me got too loud... Heron house was very nice. PB started IOL when he should have started 7CB, they had to stop and start over. He was really embarrassed and apologized to the audience (at least once).

My only outdoor R.E.M. gig. Nice weather. My wife and her friend got some really cheap tickets from scalper. Support from Mew AND Madrugada, felt like a real festival. Real rock show! Me in honey and Cuyahoga were fantastic. At one point, PB tried to throw some sheets to the audience, but they flew back and landed on his head.

So was campfire version of Let me in. Nice to have Ken back on vocals on guitar on At my most beautiful. Pleased to hear how well the accelerate material sat along with the earlier stuff (as opposed to the ATS stuff).

Great accounts, fredrik and Binky! Thanks!

I did several of the shows you did, fredrik (apart from Oslo '95 when I did Stockholm instead, and Spektrum '05). I also did Stavanger and Bergen in '05 and '08 as regards Norwegian shows. LAHTLI in Oslo 2003 was amazing. Grand Hotel show was insanely cool.

22 years ago tonight I saw R.E.M. and Pylon play at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC which was the second time I'd seen them on the Green World Tour. Prior to making the drive that night I remember talking with my Dad at the dinner table about the fall of the Berlin Wall and him saying he thought it was something he'd never see in his lifetime. That's one of the many things about that evening that stand out in my memory all these many years later.

Central Rain / Turn You Inside-Out / Belong / Exhuming McCarthy / Good Advices / Orange Crush / Feeling Gravitys Pull / Cuyahoga / These Days / World Leader Pretend / I Believe / I Remember California / Get Up / Life And How To Live It / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

I need to make my list....but wanted to thank you for the clip.

The Pagentry tour was my first R.E.M. show, at the Fox in Atlanta.  I saw them 8 times total after (as a full band), which was once every tour.

Very cool to see a video...The stage set up, with the big windows, and Bill Berry's drum riser design...I remember all of it so clearly.  I was 16 and had been waiting to see R.E.M. since Murmur, but this was the first chance I had.  I went with older friends who had seen them countless times already.  I was blown away.  I don't remember Stipe wearing the hat and trench coat that many songs in the set, but the clip is from very early in the tour and I saw the last show of the tour.

The cool thing about that clip, besides seeing footage of earlier years, is hearing the stage/monitor sound from each side.  Mike's backing vocals and Peter's guitar.  They are so loud when the camera is on their respective sides of the stage.

Here is the set that I saw on that tour...Let's Active were great too.

26 November 1986 - Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA
support: Let's Active
set: These Days / Moral Kiosk / Crazy / Sitting Still / The One I Love / Feeling Gravitys Pull / The Flowers Of Guatemala / Underneath The Bunker / Tired Of Singing Trouble / I Believe / Swan Swan H / Seven Chinese Brothers / Lightnin' Hopkins / Superman / Can't Get There From Here / Pretty Persuasion / Auctioneer (Another Engine) / Little America
encore 1: Fall On Me / Cuyahoga / Sloop John B / Strange
encore 2: Oddfellows Local 151 / Maps And Legends / Begin The Begin
encore 3: Funtime / Red Rain - So. Central Rain

So good!  Anyway, thanks agin for posting the clip!

Here's a cool photo of Stipe from the Pageantry tour but I can't seem to locate the website where I originally found it. If I'm able to track it down I'll be sure to give them proper credit.

I've seen R.E.M. twice and Tuatara once--I actually met Peter Buck at the Tuatara show. It was extremely rare for me to go to a concert, so that's it.
