The most MOR track they've ever done. Cool in one way, awful in another. Some of it sounds like Snow Patrol or Tired Pony, which is one of the only real PLUS points.
Also, isn't Michael not being able to sing or write lyrics anymore the real reason for them calling it a day? Those whinings at the end don't make me want to listen to it so much...
A strange song to end things on. It Happened Today is the song I will listen to and think this is their real goodbye.

I like it musically, I like it lyrically, but I think Michael's voice is a bit too low for this song. And his singing at the end, well, eh, I think, eh, (why not understate?) I don't like it that much. If you compare that with the powerful chanting at the end of 'It happened today'.
Musically however it proves (imo) that this band can take on just about every style and get away with it. Oh well. Time to listen for 12th time I guess. I need my fix.

I thought "It Happened Today" was written in memory of Vic Chesnutt.

there are some things i like about this song and some things i hate about it.
i like: the similarity to 'beachball', the horns, the fact that it sounds a tad like the beatles ('being for the benefit of mr kite' etc.), the fact that it's melancholic, the first two verses ('i dreamt that we were elephants...' - love it!), the melody and playfulness.
i hate: the cheesy lyrics, the lazy lyrical/vocal ending, the repetitiveness despite the length, the horrid MOD-feeling.
all in all: b-side material. undeveloped potential.

As I may have mentioned in another thread (or maybe this one), I think this is a leftover from Collapse Into Now, maybe one of the cuts they did with Bonerama. Just hazarding a guess.

I really like it. At first i was a little underwelmed by it. but it really grows. And it's just an absolutely lush song. Just shows this band could do any kind of song and still sound like REM. Which in it's self is just amazing and such a shame we will never get to hear this kind of Band ever again.

It's an ok song, no where near my favourite, although at the same time it's still my favourite new song since collapse came out which really goes to show that even if R.E.M. release an un-marvelous song, it still outshines most of the other bands out there.
The song itself has grown on me more and more every listen, though i feel the lyrics really letr this one down in places.
BTW, I have nothing but respect for the band, but if Stipe called '98 a writer's block, i'd love to know what he calls this phase. Just seems like a totally different lyricist now than the person who wrote be mine or monty got a raw deal, the list's endless. like a totally different person
