Colonel Mustard with the Candlestick in the Dining Room.

:) Bill Berry in the Library with the rope. ... Or was it John Lennon in the study with the revolver? Oh wait, that was the Beatles. ...
I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...

Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...

Speaking for myself:

When its hard to motivate yourself to do something that used to be fun, you have to evaluate why you want to do it. REM are blessed with personalities and lives that live far beyond the work they create together. It's a testament to them as individuals that they've been able to do this. A lot of artists and musicians never defined themselves outside of being "famous" or "rock stars" and end up slogging into self-parody (Guns N' Roses?).

I never intended this poll to apportion blame or point fingers. It was just something I was curious about, and  find  the result very interesting.
This board will soon cease to exist so I just wanna say one final time:

FUCKING BONO.

I voted Michael, though I don't think it really has much to do with one particular person. His focus has shifted towards art forms other than music.

Like Ethan said, they are all very much individuals outside their band activities. It seems the natural course of life to me that they've evolved and become different people over the years, just like we all do as we grow older.

I said it was only my opinion. Geesh...

And for the record, I voted it was a mutual decision by all three of them, which I believe.
I think it kinda was but also someone might have secretly wanted to carry on and felt they didn't want to box the others or one of the others into a corner or maybe felt that they'd, so to speak, been boxed into a corner. Have they actually said why they didn't just go on an indefinite hiatus? I just hope they change their minds. It'll be a bit of a mess if they do come back in 5 yrs. but it won't be that big a deal once they've fended off the journalists throwing what they've said now in their faces. I don't think it'd be wise to come back too soon though. Then again if we get a Michael solo career a'la Morrissey then that'll make up for the end of R.E.M. I was just reading some comments on The Guardian interview with Michael from last month and somoene said it was def. Peter who wanted to split and Michael 'wasn't happy about it'. I really thought it was much more the reverse so if Michael did carry on and have a good solo career...in music singing pop/rock music then Peter's only got himself to blame if he gets a bit jealous and regrets driving a wedge inbetween the band. Obviously we've alsways got to remember which just don't know what they've said and what they each feel.

I voted for Michael< but after seeing the MM interview posted here I'm starting to think it way mutual and they made the final decision after the record came out.
Michael said he's waving goodbye on the cover so they must have made the decsion before it came out.

They did. From everything I've read, they reached that decision around the time of the tour for Accelerate.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
