Glasgow-based rockers Snow Patrol will release their sixth studio album on January 10th, 2012 featuring guest appearances by members of REM and Queens of The Stone Age.

"We wanted to make a massively ambitious record - a record unlike any other we've made before… We started writing songs that were more playful, even rawer than before - we were brave enough to do what we wanted as a band, rather than what convention dictated to us," said singer Gary Lightbody.

Snow Patrol's sixth studio effort will be titled 'Fallen Empires' and was produced by Jackknife Lee. It features guest musicians Michael Stipe of REM fame, folk-rock singer Lissie and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen. The QOTSA guitarist is also featured on the first advanced single from 'Fallen Empires', entitled 'Called Out in the Dark'.
The band will perform on The Late Show with David Letterman January 9th, the night prior to the album's official release. Snow Patrol's last studio album was 'A Hundred Million Suns', which has sold over 200k copies in the US.

One day, can't get out of bed

I hope and pray the night before, we were out of our heads

The same for me, I'm not normally too keen on Snow Patrol but will love to hear Michael singing on the album.

Is this the first recorded usage of the words 'massively ambitious record' and 'Snow Patrol' in the same sentence?

Could he have picked a blander rock combo to perform with?

Ahoy!

Well at least we'll hear Michael's voice somewhere.

I like Snow Patrol and started liking them more after after seeing Tired Pony.   Michael should have sang The Good Book on the album because he sounded so much better singing it  at the NYC gig then Tom Smith from the Editor's does.

Im not a huge fan of Snow Patrol but from what ive heard of the new album (3 songs) the signs are good, and have just be enhanced by Mr Stipe's involvement, cant wait for it now!

Now that Stipey is free from the major label pressures, why can't he hang out and collaborate with some artsy musicians? From the few snippets I have heard Snow Patrol is not like music to remember. As bland as white wallpaper.
It happened today.

Snow Patrol never impressed me.   One Tired Pony are cool  however.   Perhaps this 6th album will be an improvement.

Not sure if Stipe actually sings on the album afterall,  article I was reading on the SP website says that he helped Gary Lightbody overcome a bout of writer's block when writing the song 'New York', he might appear on background vocals in this but I cant say for sure. Lovely song btw and a fine album!

Lissie features heavily throughout it, she adds so much to the record.

He isn't on it, his contribution was "providing lyric ideas" apparently. I'm glad I at least didn't have to listen through the whole thing to find that out though!

Oh okay.  Thanks.  The Dailyblam article was a little deceiving...."guest appearances by members of REM" and Queens of The Stone Age.
