Was the Carnegie Hall tribute in March 2009 the last time they performed on stage together? They sang E-Bow the Letter w/ Patti Smith...

March 11 2009 is the last performance R.E.M. ever did.  E-bow with Patti.  I can't believe I was there.  I remember Michael talking before they performed E-bow.  I was sitting with two other friends.  Michael seemed like he was talking directly to us.   The last song on the last album is Blue with Patti.  There is obviously a theme going one here.

it would be the perfect goodbye if they played this, the whole thing would become a full circle; started in Athens on the 5th of April 1980, finished in Athens on the 15th of November 2011

it would be cool if they will play something, start the set with their first song ever, and finish it with their last song ever. but my feeling says they will not play anything, because they will not be there.

Saw the whole band on stage during Patti Smiths concert in Berlin, July 2010. :)
I was in front row and it was such a special night.

they won't play together again, Mike made it clear to Rolling Stone interview.

And last performance together in stage was with Patti Smith (but not a concert of them)

their last ever concert was November 18,2008   Mexico City.

Here it is:

11 March 2009 - Carnegie Hall, New York, NY
set: E-bow The Letter (w/ Patti Smith)
notes: Tribute to R.E.M. concert

So fitting they end with E-Bow. (and of course, "officially" ended with Blue from CIN)

Patti looks stunning.

I would be very surprised to learn if that actually ends of being the case.

No matter how you slice it, it was actually their last performance, even if was an appearance with Patti Smith.

I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I can't imagine them having a reunion concert already (which is what this seems to hint at), especially given the fact that they just announced their retirement from R.E.M.

There is no way in hell Peter will be in Athens on Nov 15th unless he has an identical twin.

Peter is doing a show in Philadelphia on November 15th 2011.  I have tickets.  He is doing a show with John Wesley Harding, Scott M and members of the Decemberists.

HQ had right to post these dates on their site because this was planned before the band announced the split.

Maybe the band will perform where I am and do Via Sattelite to Athens.  Now that would be one for the ages.

Oh, I see.

Well what about for the night before the release?

Possible....who knows at this point.

Just a thought!

The release parties have typically been the night before the official release date, right? And I'm not planning on seeing them perform when I'm there, but, it would be great! As for the idea that, if they did, that it could be called a "reunion" of any sorts, I don't think so. As far as I'm concerned, they're still in the midst of the break-up process as long as the release hasn't happened, the fan club is still in place (for the moment - until the Christmas package gets sent out), and new songs have yet to be heard by public ears. HQ definitely knows how to rile up the populous with just a few words, though, eh? ;)

I was really respecting R.E.M. themselves for their very low-key and quiet "It's over" announcement on September 21. However, now I'm getting a bit "WTF?" at the hype from both WB concerning the release of '1982-2011' as well as the current hyperbole from HQ about what is happening for the release party. I don't like it at all.

Also, I've been to two release parties for R.E.M. when I lived in Pittsburgh.  One for 'Monster' and the other for 'NAIHF'. They really, really aren't that exciting, trust me. They play the new record over and over again, and raffle off some promo items concerning the new record, with some free drinks and food. Maybe it's a bit different when it actually concerns the band directly though. We'll see.

If anything, it's going to be the LAST release party.

It is what it is...

However, a FAREWELL show for charity would be cool. Not reunion tour, but a farewell show. Not saying they owe us anything cause they have truly given us so much over these long decades. The musical adventure we've been on with them is by far one of the most important ones in our lives!

But the thought of, first show in Athens--last show in Athens is an exciting concept for all. Enough to try to plan around it for one last time! That's why there's a buzz about it for next month.

All in all, those who haven't experienced a release party for R.E.M. may have the chance...one LAST time.

Just saying...

I agree with your sentiment. Time will tell what the release party will consist of. Hopefully sooner rather than later. ;)
