From Patterson Hood's third solo album which is due in 2012:
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

OK friends, these BIG NEWS type newsletters are my favorite newsletters to write and they only come every couple years so indulge me for a moment, if you please....
...
First, look away from your computer / phone / pad / device screen. Look out a window, see a patch of sky, or if you live in sunny climes, go grab a breath of fresh air.
Ahhh! Wasn’t that pleasant! We all spend too much time computing / typing / texting / and not enough listening / enjoying / breathing.
Ok. Public service breath awareness moment over. Thanks for listening. NOW...

Kevn Kinney (of Drivin' n' Cryin') A Good Country Mile (2/21)
Kenny Roby (formerly of Six String Drag) is currently recording a new album which he hopes to have out by early Spring.
Bonnie Raitt's Slipstream is due in April. More on that from Rolling Stone here.
Looks like Van Halen's new record will be out on 2/27, at least according to the artwork included in this article. The first single (and video) should be out sometime this month.
A new Son Volt record is also in the works.
A Thin Lizzy box set is due in June that will be culled from over 150 previously unheard tapes. More on that here from The Belfast Telegraph.

I see U2's Songs of Ascent listed here but if I remember correctly Bono said in a recent interview that he wasn't sure if they'd be releasing any new material in 2012 and also pondered the future of U2 in general.
