Here's a live clip of Todd's version of Jimmy Buffett's "West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown":

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Looks like Neil's been working with Crazy Horse. Whether or not this results in a new record or not is anyone's guess. Full report here from the Thrasher's Wheat blog.

Yippee, Crazy Horse album(s?) hopefully coming :)
I'm very excited.  In my opinion there hasn't been a Crazy Horse album since Broken Arrow (While Greendale is listed as a Crazy Horse album, there's no Pancho.  To my mind Crazy Horse is always 2 guitars, bass and drums)

Let's hope so. Unfortunately with Neil you just never know but I'm remaining optimistic about this as well.

Mostly that Wrecking Ball hopefully swung very effectively by The Boss.
Hoping for some Depeche Mode later in the year (should be so if they keep with their usual frequency of output, but unsure since there are - to my knowledge - no reports about them planning studio time).

2012 can't possibly beat 2011 though with releases from Indigo Girls, Radiohead, Duran Duran, Coldplay, two good local bands (i.e. Arsenal and Intergalactic lovers) and that former band from Athens I can't put my finger on.

2011 was certainly a banner year with outstanding albums by the Decemberists, Mount Moriah, Megafaun, R.E.M., the Gourds, Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, Ryan Adams and others but it's too soon to say whether 2012 is going to be a better year or not. At least two of the albums I went head over heels for in 2011 came completely out of left field so there's no telling what 2012 has in store. Hopefully more unexpected surprises (as if there were any other kind).

First it was vinyl, then Cheap Trick released their last album on 8-track. Lately, several artists are doing cassette only releases (there's even a cassette only label called Digg Up Tapes) so I guess it was only a matter of time before the reel-to-reel made a comeback.

Nothing really. Maybe if there's some new Morrissey or a Paul McCartney album apart from that stupid Kisses on the bottom oldies album he's just inflicted on the world.

This isn't from a new album but it is new music from Tift Merritt. I've really missed the sound of pedal steel in her music so I'm very glad to hear it featured so prominently in this song.

The first new album from Mike Cross since At Large In the World was released back in 1999. I haven't seen a tracklisting for the new album or any liner notes but several of his early albums featured Don Dixon and several other local North Carolina musicians. For anyone that is interested, Crossin' Carolina is for sale at MikeCross.com.
