Australia's oldest person, Miriam Schmierer, has passed away in her sleep at Masters Lodge nursing home in Hervey Bay Queensland.

The 112-year old-celebrated her birthday only last month.

Mrs Schmierer moved to Honiton Street in Hervey Bay with her husband Grenvillein 1961 to retire and be closer to their two boys, Austin and Mervyn.

Mrs Schmierer was listening to the latest release from the now defunct Iconic college rock band R.E.M. on her Ipod when she passed away last night. Mrs Schmierer made headlines in 2005 when at 106 years of age she attended the R.E.M. concert at the Entertainment Centre.

"Ive always liked music, fast music. It seems I had to live a very long time for music to catch up to my tastes" Miriam said when interviewed by The Leader in 2006.

Died of a broken heart IMHO>

That's what most people die of. It kind of just stops.
C'mon play the goddamn music

"It seems I had to live a very long time for music to catch up to my tastes"

Brilliant quote.

Did any of the articles at the time mention whether the band knew of her presence at the show?

I dont think so, we only knew she was alive because she died.

Me ole mate Jack Lockett died a few years ago aged 111. His take on life was brilliant:

"I had a lot of troubles in my life, but I never let any of then worry me".

Absolutely cool. It seems she enjoyed her long life.

That's a beautiful story.  What a long life.

That's how a good person should go. I can only hope I go the same way. Michael singing me into a permanent sleep.

Unfortunately, a lot of people die from cancer and that is one of the worst deaths to go through or to have to witness as I did with my late Grandmother. Just watching someone wasting away and you cannot do anything to help them.

What a long life.  If anything music helped her live so long.

Sounds like quite a woman.  Is that interview from 2006 available anywhere?

Is the story actually true? Just wondering because I can't find a similar news item anywhere.

There's plenty about her passing, but nothing mentioning R.E.M.

Honestly I thought it's a little weird that the only thing said about a person in her death is what was her favorite band.
In 1984 Orwell writes of a nation that constantly under attack with a undescribed enemy, as such causing permanent anxiousness in the population a constance of fear of the outside and a justification for both the suppression of people and increased governmetal control and military spending. The genius of the unidentified enemy is the need for this never to end.

When you type her name in Yahoo.  Tons of articles from newspapers come up. None of them I looked at mention her listening to R.E.M.
