Well here I am posting at Murmurs again.  It feels like it’s been a long time, and yet not. Like many others, I have grown and changed and haven't been a regular poster here in many years. I am ashamed to say that I didn’t hear the news of the band retiring until 3 days after the announcement when a friend who I made here at Murmurs sent me an email about it. (Yes, I said “retiring” because “breaking up” doesn’t seem right.) My first reaction was that it was no surprise.  The band just finished their last contracted album and then they decided not to tour.  No tour was a big disappointment to me, since I always looked forward to that feeling of renewed love for one of my favorite bands every time I saw them live. I am not angry about their decision though.  I have been a fan of REM since I was 12 years old and now I am 40!  Murmurs was the first album I bought with my own allowance money I saved up as a kid.  The first time I saw them live was at MSG in NYC in the late 80’s when they toured for “Green”, and I have seen them several times since. I am fortunate enough to be old enough to have followed their career from the beginning, and I still love them now at the end.

What a great post! Congratulations, Connie, on your successes - education, new career, growing young 'uns - and thank you for sharing so beautifully. :)
I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...

Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...

-The song which welcomed me to the world of REM, 23 years ago, September 1988

This pic is so amazing that people still have their mouth open. I just managed to recover and post.
In 1984 Orwell writes of a nation that constantly under attack with a undescribed enemy, as such causing permanent anxiousness in the population a constance of fear of the outside and a justification for both the suppression of people and increased governmetal control and military spending. The genius of the unidentified enemy is the need for this never to end.
