Let us just be grateful that 'That someone is you' isn't on it. I don't know what the hell it's doing on CIN. Musically it's okay, but it seems so simplistic. Maybe there's a deeper mystery still waiting to be revealed to me.

ha! i was just thinking it's a shame they didn't include that one. it's one of the most vibrant and catchy songs of their later years, although i can see why many people consider it a trifle.

Well, lyrically it starts out just great: 'With the restraint of New Order covers, young marble giants etc.' But then it goes completely wrong, picks up again (Sharon Stone Casino Scarface Al Pacino), and wrong again. On the other hand: I can't stop myself from singing along.

And "That someone has pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand Pulled me up and out of me!" (or rather me-eeee-eeee-eeee-eee) reminds me to much of "where is the cartoon escape hatch for me?" (Accelerate)

I don't dislike it, but I wouldn't want it to be an example for what R.E.M. was.

I really didn't end up enjoying the album version, most probably because I heard this version first which is 100% superior. Still do not know why they didn't just use this recording on the final release.

There actually is a second live performance of this song, quite different from the one posted above.

It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

I know this isn't really the place to ask....but, has anyone made MP3's of all the in-studio takes for their CiN material and made that available in any respects?  I'd rather have all the live in studio versions together on my iPod, and not have to watch the video or be connected to the internet.  If you have a collection of them all, contact me at bluemookie at att dot net.  Thanks.

Yeah I prefer the one I posted to be honest, but both are better than the studio version imo.

Me too ! And I agree with you, the studio version was a let down. Be that as it may, That Someone Is You is one of my favorites off CIN, it's very catchy and melodic !

Track listings in direct chronological order.   Indeed sign of a band and a band leader(stipe) that is more interested in art, his boyfriend than the band itself.

Then They know(or should) that find the river is favourite track on the majority of fans(when polled) and they miss it out.

Sorry if it's not popular but given the direct pleasure their albums give to MILLIONS worldwide I'm annoyed they(stipe, buck I suspect)  care little for the fans and their love their music.

Not a knee-jerk reaction as I have waited days to post.

Out of curiosity then, what studio tracks would people include if you were going to pick 20 more tracks to make a Disc 3?
Soundtrack songs and B-Sides are valid IMHO.

95% of fans would have complained (when polled, as you put it) if it had been in non-chronological order. Why on earth mess up that order, BTW?

Why not go listen to it on In Time then? They could never please everyone.

Didn't improve the quality though from what I can assess. <_<

I'd just like to second this request - I would love to get hold of the exisiting studio / live versions of some collapse into now songs.  Bluemookie, if you or anybody else is lucky enough to find them could you also drop me a quick email please? I'm and WMEdwards1984 at googlemail dot com.  Many thanks! Billy :)

The class prick returns. I would guess fans would have prefered a mix of irs and WB stuff. You know fuck all wankchops.

Picking 40 tracks surely the band would want to pick the favourite of their followers?   A single that charted.

Huh?

With all due respect, who doesn't care more about their partner than their day job?  Are you saying REM would be more important to you than your partner?

Good grief, we're talking about a fucking band here, not your surrogate parents!

I'm a gutted as everyone, but the entitlement that a lot are feeling is just plain weird.  I'm having flashbacks to when I was 12yrs old and sat in a class full of crying girls because New Kids On The Block split up!
All the world will be your enemy, O' Prince of a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you they will kill you, but first they must catch you!

Would it put strain on your lover if you had to record once every 4/5 years.

Feeble.

Record where?  Oh yeah, Berlin and New Orleans.  Then jetting off round the world on promo's, and never mind a tour.  That's tough on anyone, nevermind your partner!  I suppose in your world, recording an album is simply a case of spending a few days in a studio?  You seem to have a very poor grasp of the work that being in a band entails.
