I don't think you can tell how involved they were witht the tracklist*. Which I don't care about anyway, I have all the songs. I'll buy it though rather than download the new song sindividually, because I want to see the liner notes.
Can anyone point me to the Mike Mills interview with Rolling Stone?
*Looks like they haven't just gone on sales though...?
EDIT last REM gig was 2008? Was that a really short tour? I had tickets but couldn't make it. Twickenham I think...
EDIT is thais really the last CD with them still together? They're not together are they?

You can find most of their tour dates from over the years at the R.E.M. Timeline site.

They are not together, nor would they need to be to release an album (particularly a greatest hits comp). Collapse Into Now is the last record they did while they were still together though I would imagine there will be some releases from the archives in the years to come, namely the box set that's been mentioned so often through the years.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Surprised that "Country Feedback" is not on there, being Michael's favorite song. Also surprised about "New Test Leper" but as NAIHF is my favorite record, pleased. Not my choice of tracklist for a best of (a common thread, of course), but I see where they're going with this. Might as well been called "Singles Collected."
Keen on hearing the new songs. Is "Hallelujah" a cover? I should hope not.

I really hope it is not a cover as well, especially as Mr L Cohen himself said the song should get a rest for a while!.
As for the track listing i miss Laughing, Pilgrimage, E Bow and Find a River, and only one song from Monster my second fav album! but you can't please everyone. Happily suprised by Sidewinder as I know Peter was not fond of it at one point.
I WANTED MOUNT NOTHING!!!

I simply meant I felt badly that it's going to go down in history as R.E.M.'s worst record and least liked record, that's all I meant by "poor ATS".
Well it's got to go to one of their records.

I just tried to put together a "Best Of" album, including all my favourite gems, and it came out at 121 tracks. So I guess they're not going to please everyone.
I'm happy with the track listing they've gone for, though (even though more from Up and Reveal would have been nice). I'm excited for the new tracks. Their titles sound like a farewell.

Man, a DVD would be awesome with this release. I guess the songlist doesn't really matter, the only thing that we don't already have are the 3 new songs. Monster did get the shaft- I really like I don't sleep I dream and King of Comedy. I wonder how soon it will be before we see a Michael Stipe solo album......

Just a feeling but I don't think he'll really miss it that much and think a solo album is highly unlikely.
Speaking only for myself, given what I've heard of him outside of REM, on balance I'm not sure I want to hear one (though I undoubtedly would if one were released).

That article is great and I understand think it was time to break up. However, the lack of a farewell tour just messes the whole exit strategy up completely. If they wanted to do it right, a farewell tour would of been it.
Peter would of been in R.E.M until the cows came home but Michael and Mike have certainly showed they didn't want to continue. No tour folks, come on

No offence but thats only because you want one. Don't get mw wrong, I'd try to go if they were doing one, but at the end of the day it's just another tour. Just think of CIN as another album they didnt tour behind.

Well, I guess we can safely identify the "garbage" part:
Stand
Shiny Happy People
Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter
"Monster" and "Around the Sun," while not among their most commercially hailed albums, are underrepresented with one song apiece. Not enough "NAIHF" -- no "E-Bow" or "Bittersweet Me"? -- while there's too much "Green."
I, too, would have liked to have seen "It Happened Today." Shocked (and pleasantly surprised) not to see "Daysleeper."
Anyway, looking forward to the last new R.E.M. I'll ever hear. Hopefully it's more "Bad Day" than "Animal."

I love Michael, but he's not Thom Yorke. What's he going to do, just sing? He hadn't even been doing much of that on recent R.E.M. albums, going the shouting/spoken-word-delivery route, for the most part.

Michael will never make a solo album. There's a much greater chance of Mike making one. Peter will continue to tour with every band currently existing.
It's all here where I keep it, it's all in the yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine...

excited for the three new songs, but it's kinda too bad they aren't going to release them as an EP instead. it'd be neat to bookend their career with EPs.

Oh stop moaning you lot
. You'll get 3 new songs as part of the package, just buy it
I've got to say I love the cover. The migration between the different formats from tape to mp3 is brilliant.

Daysleeper should be on there, no doubt about it.
I also think Strange Currencies and World leader pretend should have made the cut.
Other than that not a bad tracklisting for this kind of package.

I think a 10" release with the three new songs would be great. What are the odds of this happening? Maybe for the next Record Store Day...
