Even so ... I doubt that there was ever an issue of choosing one (the band) over the other (the partner).

I wasn't the one who said it was :)

Record where?  Oh yeah, Berlin and New Orleans.  Then jetting off round the world on promo's, and never mind a tour.  That's tough on anyone, nevermind your partner!  I suppose in your world, recording an album is simply a case of spending a few days in a studio?  You seem to have a very poor grasp of the work that being in a band entails.

Not sure whether to respect your comments of laugh without control.

Clearly you dont have to move anywhere to record a record,   Promotion is indeed as the name suggests, and not essential.

Well you do if the members of your band live thousands of miles away from each other.

That article is great and I understand think it was time to break up.  However, the lack of a farewell tour just messes the whole exit strategy up completely.  If they wanted to do it right, a farewell tour would of been it.

If they had done a farewell tour, especially after releasing a greatest hits collection, they would have been accused of doing it solely for the cash. Not to mention, their hearts clearly aren't into performing live with one another anymore. On top of that it just would have come across as crass. That's the sort of thing bands like the Eagles do, not R.E.M. It's perfectly characteristic of them not to have done one.

I love Michael, but he's not Thom Yorke. What's he going to do, just sing?

You mean all acappella? Plenty of folks that are primarily vocalists have made albums (solo and otherwise) over the years. It's not like Stipe can't call in a group of musicians to assist him in making a solo record. While the prospect of him recording one may seem pretty far fetched to some, he's done other things on the side since the beginning of R.E.M. As for a Mills solo album, he's already mentioned in an interview (that was conducted around the time Collapse Into Now was released) that he has plans to record one.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I wonder why they don't have a 'special edition' which may as well be the fabled box set, it would be the perfect fan thank you, even 'In time' had that wonderful rareities disk that had 'revolution' and 'it's a free world baby' on it.

As an aside I think the most underated song i know is 'try not to breath', which seems strange on their most popular album, but i have never seen it live or given an outing on the wonderful olympia recordings.

it's (the second disc ) just the only positive thing about InTime as the main disc is terrible. I mean it holds 18 songs an we have on it Animal - why??, Bad Day - why??, All The Right Friends - why??, just one song from OOT and Monster - why??....i don't like it. Also because we talk about a Best Of not a Greatest Hits that maybe is more about the singles, hits in general...

anyway i'm happy for this greatest hits, i'm ok with the tracklist and i'm happy for the new songs on it. i think it's fine. Also because there should be "10" more discs if we would like to see something special from their carreer...?

Those are all ripped from the various videos of the band rehearsing the songs at Hansa that were released to promote the album. Well, the copy of That Someone Is You is from the b-side of the German Oh My Heart single because many people on here (myself included) think it's better than the video version.

Check the graphic on HQ, it shows each song title in the font used on the original release, including Hib-tone for RFE and singles in some other cases as well. Very cool.
