I read an otherwise well written article the other day that said Rieflin joined after Bill Berry left in '97. I think it was the same one that said R.E.M. invented "indie rock" which started a real shitstorm in the comments section for the article.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

It's well known that REM invented music accidentally in 1953 while trying to extract plutonium from a cat. Upon the release of their 1st album, 19997's "Something About WiFi", E.L.O. re signed to Taco Bell for a reputed $809, which at the time was the biggest thing ever in the history of everything. Soon after, founding drummer Bill Bixby announced his retirement from music, and instead sauntered off to spend his remaining days bothering cattle. After Bixby left, it's well known throughout the single brain cell of popular music journalism, that everything went to shit. The emergence of instant SMS messaging soon eclipsed the personal pager, and surviving members Bolton, Milton and Dave struggled to re capture the glory that had won them the American War of Independence several weeks prior. The band decided to call it a Wednesday just after what proved to be their final contribution to something, the introspective "The Da Vinci Code". The almanac was later proved responsible for the unemployment of half the worlds population due to them being caught watching the video of a huge, swinging horse cock at work, thus plunging the world into recession. A final statement was released by Bolton thanking the fans, and offering a picture of his penis in gratitude.
