Feel free to post any and all articles on the demise of R.E.M. here. These are just a few that I've run across in the past couple of days. Most are just a rehash of the original statements issued by the band at HQ but some aren't.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Good post with interesting reads, although my eyes got wet through the third one so I stopped for now...
Here's the one from the website of Germany's biggest TV newscaster "Tagesschau" where I first learned the sad tale of their breakup:
http://www.tagesscha...rennung100.html
http://www.tagesscha...audio75432.html (German audio - good recap of their career)
after that I rushed to REMHq...
It might be silly but now I feel empty and deeply sad and letdown inside

I think I've gotten more choked up reading some of the articles and reminisces (I refuse to call them "obituaries") here than I have by the press release at HQ (with the very notable exception of Peter Buck's entry). The first day was the toughest and even though I've accepted the news, I still haven't been able to put my own thoughts into words.

I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...
Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...

and i agree, peter's piece on hq was typical of him, and all the more moving for that.

It was his "...watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world" quote that was the first thing to put a lump in my throat. It sent me right back to when I was a very young man of 20 years of age and hearing "Laughing" for the first time on the local radio station. It also reminded me that R.E.M. had a much larger effect on me than just the music, they opened my eyes to social and political activism through their support of various causes. I may not have always agreed with them on everything but their own personal activism helped me to think for myself.

I was expecting Mike's words to make me cry, but unexpectedly it was Peter's quote instead.
I had to just close my eyes and let the tears drip for a few moments.
"I wound up figuring out something that I had never been able to figure out before, which was: who am I after R.E.M.? I now know, and I’m OK with it. I’m just not a whole lot without them. I’ve got a nice voice and good cheekbones, but without those guys writing songs with me, I don’t know that anyone would ever hear what I have to say.” . . ---Michael Stipe

Agreed - nice little love letter to the band, cheekily done.
