I could be highly wrong but it makes more sense to tour later for a reunion tour than it does to tour now. Even around 2005 R.E.M did huge shows like hide park and pulled it off but if they toured now I doubt they'd get anywhere near as much for a send off as we'd want.
It makes sense to tour in say 4-5 years time for a reunion tour which people will go crazy for. Just my two cents.

Lets face it guys: R.E.M. wont tour anymore. A reunion will not be the same, it wont be a real band , just 3 (maybe 4!) friends playing their old stuff to a crowd of "old" fans.

Agree. I would rather see a reunion tour down the road with a few "select" dates and cities. They could also film it and release it on DVD for those who miss out OR air it as a PBS special.

I'm curious as to why so many people seem to think they're suddenly going to tour despite the fact that they just announced their disbandment yesterday? Someone in another thread seems to think they may also make some live appearances in support of Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982 - 2011. Why would they do that when they wouldn't even tour behind Collapse Into Now or even make any TV appearance as a band to help support the record? I realize it's hard to accept the fact that R.E.M. is over but they are.
I also don't buy into the idea of a reunion tour whether it's next year or 5 years from now. It's best to keep the "never say never" mentality in mind, especially when it comes to rock n' roll but to my way of thinking, a reunion tour would only cheapen the sentiment. After all, R.E.M. are not now, nor have they ever been the Eagles. Leave those sort of cash-in tours to artists who don't give a fuck about their fans and only want to make more money. I'm hoping R.E.M. will walk away from this for good. They gave us 31 years yet some "fans" want to squeeze every last drop out of them. They gave us their all but some folks still want more. I don't get it.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I agree with Nate. They're done, dusted.
The only thing that wouldn't surprise me (as I posted on another thread) would be a one off gig/celebration with Bill once the hoohaa's died down. Possibly in Athens and released as a DVD/live album afterwards. I don't think it's pie in the sky thinking to believe that the band would love one last hurrah as the original four piece as much as the fans. It would never be on a large scale though, and probably something the average fan wouldn't be able to get anywhere near.
As for a reformation and tour? I'd say no chance.

Why would anyone want to see them re-hash old stuff purely for cash?
Sure, I've been lucky to see them three or four times and I have my memories of those (Dublin in 2007 probably the best) but I see no reason for it.

No thanks to the reunion. They did not have to break up after Bill Berry left, and I am glad the did not. I am proud of them for hanging in there, trying and at times succeeding beautifully.
They left now, it's done. It was theirs to end and they did.

There are those that never saw them and those that feel R.E.M. owe them one last hurrah. Perfectly legitimate reasons to want to see them tour one last time that have nothing to do with cash but I honestly don't see it happening. For now, the tour in 2008 stands as the "farewell" tour. I know when I saw 10,000 Maniacs in 1993, that was their last tour with Natalie (no other incarnation of that band is 10,000 Manics, at least to me) and was also their "farewell". If memory serves, no one else knew it at the time but the band members themselves. That's the way to do it. There's just too many entanglements that come with "farewell" tours. I'm glad R.E.M. didn't go out that way, it wouldn't have suited them or us as fans.

I expected a tour sometime soon. They are the best band I have ever seen live. Now I don't expect anything. The way they have finished seems to put a line across anything else than what is already in the pipeline. Although I am disappointed that there won't be anything else I agree with driver Nate that they aren't that type of band.

I don't expect it to happen, I think when they say they're done, they're done, but I'd be first in line for tickets to any future show.

Sadly I think they will never tour again. I'm still angry with them and think they are down right jerks for breaking up the band simply because they couldn't make a decision about what they wanted to do next. Taking a longer break would of been the right choice. I'm now hearing things that one of the reasons R.E.M. broke up is because of Michael posing naked on Tumblr. I'm sure that isn't true at all. But that's the things I'm seeing online. I know a ton more rumors will start despite that the guys each made a statement.
It's hard for those of us who have traveled around different cities and countries just to see them. This year was the first year I traveled that wasn't for an R.E.M. tour or special show.
You know Capi someone on tumblr reminded me that we saw the guys very last performance as a band at the Tribute show on March 11, 2009 and of course the very last song we heard is E-bow. The fact that the guys didn't play another song even when Patti Smith wanted to made me think something was up with them.
I wonder now what happens with the fanclub? Are they going to stay open until the end of the year? Do we get a final fanclub gift? Are they going to refund the fans whose memberships do not expire until 2013?

Due to R.E.M.'s decision to disband on September 21st, we will no longer accept new memberships or renewals in the Fan Club. To be clear, if you were a member in good standing as of September 21st you will receive the final newsletter and Christmas single-- just like normal. The band would like to thank its fans for their amazing support over the many years! And of course, stay tuned to remhq.com for further information about R.E.M.'s greatest hits set to be released in November 2011.

I got a reminder to renew my fan club subscription a few days ago too, I am sad that it is now not to be
I would love to see them tour again, but for selfish reasons. I don't think they will, but for now I want to hold onto hope bacause I am not ready to let them go yet
I really don't think R.E.M. would do a reunion tour because they are not the kind of tacky band who would cash in on that kind of thing, but for now, I will live in hope...

I paid, just last week, even though even if I hadn't I would still have been a paid up member until 11 Oct 2011.
How can anyone be paid up until 2013?

I am wondering that too. My membership runs out in October, but I was kind of hoping that if Christmas packages are being sent out this year that I'd get one
