Read it here.

RollingStone.com has also posted a photo gallery of R.E.M. through the years.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Love this,

"Hardly anyone liked R.E.M. who didn't like them way too much, so part of being an R.E.M. fan meant getting wildly overinvested and then feeling vaguely disappointed by whatever they did next."

This is probably the closest thing I've read to my own feelings. I'm just not as talented and literate to put it in such a way. Excellent.

this was my favourite bit from the piece:

Quote

People love to complain that R.E.M. should have broken up when Bill Berry quit in 1997, to preserve their legacy in a pristine state. Except this misses the fundamental point of R.E.M., which is that rock and roll is something you do, something that's part of your real sloppy life, rather than a fleeting phase.

"

Break R.E.M.'s career into "Eighties" and "Nineties" halves, and you've got two of the best bands that ever existed." He's right, you know. :D

It's all here where I keep it, it's all in the yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine...

That is so SPOT ON !!!!!

It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.
