Hello REM fans.

The outpouring of affection and remembrance in the last day has been overwhelming. Besides ThankYouRem.com, I set up a new forum for people to reflect on the band and what they've meant to them.

The band and office and everyone appreciate the outpouring of love and support.

Does anybody have any news on Michael becoming a DJ? Apparently he was going to do that at the end of the world.

Actually, I'm glad there isn't one and I sincerely hope there never is. Facebook is everywhere I fucking turn online these days. It's refreshing to visit sites that aren't in some way connected with it.

I don't think there's any plans to do away with Murmurs anytime soon. I believe EThan has mentioned streamlining the site but that's it. There's lots of boards out there devoted to bands/artists that are no longer active, I don't see why Murmurs would be any different. There will be plenty of archival releases and individual projects to discuss in the future, I'm sure.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

What can I say.
I am filled with sadsweetness...
I will never forget when I discovered them after Out of Time....
I did a retrospective on them and was blown away! I simply could not get enough of them and they became my musical and poetic role models.
Then came Automatic and they became my official favorite band.
I loved everything they did after Bill left except for parts of Around the Sun and CIN.
Their songs have always saved me, inspired me, energized me, and kept me fascinated by life.
All I want to say is Thank you REM for opening up another part of life for me.
I will always loved what you embodied and you will be in my heart for all time.
Thank you Bill for your fine big drums, thank you Mike for your beautiful bass, lovely harmonies, rolling piano and screaming organs (the best), thank you  Peter for being the heavy electric man, the folksy man, the poppy man, the man who can play anything with strings (except violin?)....Mr cool....thank you Michael for being my poet laureate and my friend and fellow. Thank you REM for opening my eyes and my heart.
All love....

I'm not sure where this CNN - Anderson Cooper video about REM breaking up should be placed, so it's here for now:

The first conversation I ever had with the woman who would become my wife and the mother of my kids was about R.E.M. We bonded instantly in large part because of our shared love of music, and R.E.M. in particular. We danced to At My Most Beautiful at our wedding, and after almost a full harrowing month of our premature twins being kept in the hospital, we finally brought them home with "In Time" playing on the car stereo. Just this morning, my seven year old put "Alligator Aviator..." on the ipod before school. They're more than just the soundtrack to MY life for me, they are the soundtrack to my family.

I can't thank them enough.

Thanks, I started a thread for articles about the end of R.E.M. here. Thanks for posting, I believe someone already posted the Colin Meloy clip there but I just now added this clip to the thread.

Here are my favorite memories:

Buying my first cassette tape of Out of Time at a store called Caldor for $6.00
Getting my best friend into R.E.M. as much as me.
Seeing them for the first time at the Spectrum here in Philadelphia on the Monster tour. Getting 7th and 3rd row seats!
Being so excited for every new song, and album to be released!
Meeting the band in 1999 at 2 different sound checks.
All the times I have seen them live, all with amazing memories!
Vote for Change here in Philadelphia.
Catching the harmonica in Boston from Michael.
Meeting the band again in Chicago in 2004.
Going to England and Canada for shows.
The amazing concert pictures I have to last a lifetime.
Getting the hear I Believe in Virginia thanks to Scott.
6 shows on the 2008 tour, some of the best I have ever seen, Eddie Vedder here in Philadelphia for Begin the Begin! 2nd row center seats.
Ebow the Letter at Carnegie Hall after the tribute show with Patti -- awesome!

And too many more to mention.

Thank you for everything... will always be hoping for more...

Thank God for R.E.M. in 1987 when I was in 10th grade and hated the music on the radio (TOP 40) I discovered WXPN in Philadelphia (where I lived in 1987) and discovered something amazing. Started watching MTV's 120 minutes (videotaped of course during the school months) which began my affair with Michael, Peter, Mike and Bill.  I cursed my father & mother in 1989 when I wasn't allowed to see them on the Green tour because it was a Sunday and a school night where dad made up for it brought me home a tour shirt which I have to this day (dad was a Philly policeman who was detatiled to the show that night) and my husband asking me just a few days ago to "retire" the shirt. Yes, I did, I folded it neatly and put it in a box in my closet with my tears. R.E.M. has been with me since 1987. 1987 was two, maybe three life times ago. Both my grandparents were still alive, I had a dog as opposed to a cat which I have now, Michael had hair (LoL, trying to lighten it up here) and Good God almighty Peter Buck was fucking hot! Okay so lets see, my grandparents are deceased, Michael is bald, Peter is old, I am happy very happy but September 21, 2011 will be etched in my soul forever as the day a piece of my heart died. Thank you, Michael, Peter, Mike & Bill for giving me hope, joy, tears of joy and sadness, through it all you were there for me, can't thank you enough and damn I tried to have You Are The Everything as my wedding song in 2005 but couldn't convince the man to do so. But you guys will forever be apart of my life as you were in 1987.

What song did "the man" allow you to play at your wedding?

That someone just pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand.

It was a country song called, "She Thinks She Needs Me" by Andy Griggs.

Man, I made my husband sound like the "man" who always kept Homey the Clown down. LoL  I suppose that's my brain function at 2:30 in the AM.  :P
