I figured I'd pop in and say Bucky has closed OurREM.com...

Is that the one that started out as "the pee forum"?? Looks like the link just redirects to Patrick's youtube site now, did he give any explanation for closing it?
I remember when he was upset about people calling him by his real name, lol how times have changed...

Seems like the place to post, I suppose. It's nice to see so many people I recognize from yesteryear. I was at Murmurs from basically its inception, back when you could pretty easily read every message posted during the day. It's hard to say whether the forums changed or I did--probably both--all I know is I found things getting bigger, recognizing fewer and fewer names from days gone by, and gradually I guess I sort of moved on to other sites.
I guess the biggest change is then when I started coming here, I was about 17 or 18 year old and in community college. Now I'm 32, have a Master's degree, and work as a substitute teacher for the local district. I get to do a lot of the highly capable and Sped classes, which makes me happy. I guess special programs are kind of my little niche. I'm still a big REM fan, though, and--for the most part--as content with life as I've ever been.
Like everyone else, I reacted with some sadness to REM's breakup announcement, but I also almost immediately felt something else too--I was OK with it ending this way. There's something very admirable about knowing when to walk away from something before the bitter end. It's also a reminder that everything--be it a band, a web community, or life itself--is temporary, and sometimes the time just feels right to move along to the next thing. It's the nature of things. Change happens and we have to accept it. But it's nice to see everyone else here once more, hopefully doing well and certainly different after all these years.

I am so very late to this party.
I'm here. I pop in from time to time, decide there's nothing to say, and move on. Still in the PacNW. I was in St Paul in February, though. At one point I actually thought, "I wonder how that jackass Sam is? Betcha he's still a fucker. The Vikings suck. Go Pack." I still hate your fucking avatar. (How's that? Just like old times?)
My reason is a two year daughter. Dicking around time in general is pretty much gone. This site certainly kept me entertained for quite a while after I joined in 2005, and it's cool to see some of those I engaged with most posting in this thread. It's nice to know folks are still alive and functioning sufficiently well to type a few coherent sentences.
I keep meaning to email you whenever I head to Seattle. I planned on a day trip in November to wander around the U District. There are a couple vegan places I wanted to try out, but I had to cancel my trip due to a shitty sinus infection. I was there in July but I kept to downtown and Capital Hill. I'll be down sometime in the spring, though.
Doing pretty well. Donna's doing well, and both kids are in college now. It's hard to believe. I just quit my job on Friday to help create a high-tech company in California. Kinda nervous, but also excited. Should be an interesting couple of years.
As far as cool is concerned, that's not defined my me..
Cool on the company. Good luck. Both kids are in college? I'm so very old (but not as old as Donna). I thought of you when Wisconsin played Michigan State this fall in football. You two totally need to head up this direction at some point. I was telling a friend about you and Donna the other day. Something along the lines of, "Seriously, they are two of the coolest people I've ever known. And you know what's even better? He looks like Neil Young and she looks like Patti Smith. Seriously! It's amazing."
Anyway... Nice to see the old folks back, even if I am catching up several months late and a few weeks before this site is going to end. Is it still going to stop? I haven't been paying attention. Those of you who have me email, drop me a line and keep in touch.

Oh yeah, where the hell is Biz? She needs to pop in just so I can harass her one more time.

There are no longer plans for Murmurs to be "frozen in time" as of December 31st. It will continue on but with some volunteers with programming knowledge at the helm to help keep it afloat.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Good to know. That way I can stil drop by from time-to-time, lurk, read, and move on.
Anyway... Most of the Murmurs people I want to stay in contact with I am friends with on Facebook. It's kind of weird, though, because now everyone has full names and face and all that. There have been a couple of times, though, I had to email Jason or Mary or Steve to find out who was sending me a friend request.
