I hope that everybody is doing well!

I have seen a lot of "old" users here today including me.
I actually remembered my password....and it has nothing to do with the band

I'm sad, but it;'s not like anybody died, and nobody is going to delete all evidence of R.E.M.'s existence, and we'll always have the memories!!
I'm on the look out for the resurrection of some of my favourite loonies, such as ChriStratton and Goldberry! And there must be somebody out there who spoke to Michael in a dream about the split!

I know, nothing like a bit of drama to get the oldies-but-goodies to crawl out of the woodwork.

Good to see some of the older people here again! Older meaning younger... oh, you know what I mean.
I should get Donna to respond just for old times sake.

It is nice to see some familiar faces around here! I've missed so many of the "old" crowd when I pop in... I hope everybody is doing well.
It's kind of bittersweet now that REM is ending to remember that it was REM that brought us all together to this site, it was REM that prompted Ethan to create this site.... and we made it even bigger than the band, made so many connections.

It's definitely not a funeral, but the Crowded House lyric in this thread title came to mind when I thought of seeing old faces after a common circumstance draws us together again.
To be quite honest, I have not listened to the newer R.E.M. stuff in a while and I never bothered buying the latest album, but the news of the break up was the sound of another door closing softly behind me as I grow older and continue to move forward into new experiences.
Not sadness, necessarily... It's more like the title of the Crowded House song in question: "Never Be The Same".

Heh heh. Thanks for the chuckle. I'm sorry to see the boys hang it up, but they had a great run. Kinda expected this - Collapse felt like an epitaph, and a hiking friend I met from Athens this past winter, a friend of Mike's, confirmed my sense that the guys were pretty well ready to end it, that they had a strong sense that they'd done the REM thing, nothing left to discover there.
They had an amazing run - had a lot of fun, made a lot of great music, moved a lot of people, mentored countless musical heirs, made more money than they ever could need, and have done a lot of good with their fame and fortune.
Just the other day I was telling a friend about how, in the early days, they'd roam the countryside in a beat-up old station wagon, stopping and playing at any ramshackle pub or pizza joint which would feed them and get them cheap beer. Theirs is one of the great stories in rock and roll history. Bravo and thanks to them all.
I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...
Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...
-The song which welcomed me to the world of REM, 23 years ago, September 1988

I had to look in as well. Haven't posted much so don't expect anybody to remember me.
Obviously I feel a bit sad - can't really be any different I think. Just mildly though. :-)
Listened to something on the radio yesterday - can't even remember what it was but at some point it went through my head that one day R.E.M. might stop.
BTW I just looked myself up - I joined Murmurs on the 21st September 2005... I'm so glad to be here - and it's nice to see some of the "old" names again. :-)

A little bit sad, it is the end of an era.
But its great to see everyone here, the band should break up more frequently.

I guess that means I have to pop in as well, even if it's for a sad occasion. Always weird how these things bring people (back) together.

It's not a funeral but I sure wish we could have a celebration of REM. It would be great to be able to gather together with a bunch of REM fans/friends somewhere, blast REM music all night and raise a glass or twelve.
