Since this will supposedly fulfill their contract with Warners, I'm hoping it's the last of the greatest hits collections. I certainly hope they're not going to be one of those bands that continues to milk their fans by continually releasing compilations with one or two new songs on it. Anything that's left in the vaults should be reserved for the box set. I have complete confidence there will be one as they've mentioned it so often over the years and that it wouldn't come out until after R.E.M. disbanded. Thing is, now that they're without a label, who will release it? Perhaps Rhino, that way it can include stuff from both I.R.S. and Warner Brothers. I also have a feeling that no matter what they do, they will not please everyone. Lots of folks seem to think there's nothing left in the vaults but how many people knew of the Athens sessions for the Lifes Rich Pageant reissue? I would imagine there's lots of stuff in the vaults that even the most hardcore fan isn't aware of.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I wonder if the decision to quit was made prior to the recording of these 4 new songs. I know Ethan said he sensed it last fall, but I wonder if the band collectively knew they were splitting. I think it could only have a positive effect on these songs if that were the case, rather than just going through the motions to record contractual new songs to stick on the record.

They knew they were going to split since Collapse into now was done, The lyrics on All the Best, It Happened Today, Marlon Brando, and the magnificent great finale with Blue...   also the "goodbye" wave on the album cover,  bringing Anton Cobijn again for the photo shoot, writing an album that sound a bit like most of their albums.. thats it...   we had evidence everywhere since Collapse was released.

The message on July from Michael sayin "in the studio" well they were recording... but not a new album as we expected, they were recording this songs because they knew this was the end. And I am very proud of them by the way the say Goodbye.

It'll all come out in the wash in future interviews and the inevitable book but I, for one, didn't read any sort of cryptic messages into Collapse Into Now whether it be the lyrics or the album cover. For all we know they were actually starting work on a follow up record and not unreleased filler to help sell yet another greatest hits collection.

Perhaps they started the follow up and stopped after realizing that, like they said, they had run out of ideas. I don't really see R.E.M. intentionally making filler when it's the last original pieces of music they will release.

I agree. This has been known by those close to the band for a while.

I don't recall reading anything that said they'd run out of ideas. As with the demise of any relationship, whether it be that of a band or a marriage, there's always a myriad of reasons to call it quits. Seldom is it ever just one thing. In the case of R.E.M., I think EThan has tried to point out that one of the many reasons for them to call it quits at this point was because they found themselves at a loss as to how to market themselves in the current musical climate. Things have changed drastically since the heady days when they first released that Hibtone 45 and in some ways, things are remarkably the same. R.E.M. aren't the only ones that were trying to find a new business model but they also weren't at a level such as Radiohead to just release an album where everyone could name their own price. Maybe at one point in their career they were but those days had long since passed.

Filler was a poor choice of words on my part, I just meant including new material (as is often the case with greatest hits packages) to ensure they sell.

Disagreed. If Collapse Into Now was truly meant to be their last album, why are they including songs that were intended to be on the follow up album on the upcoming greatest hits collection?

Really? The people I know who are friendly with the band were fairly stunned by the news. I'd also heard rumors of them touring the hits album, which sadly won't happen now. And if you're looking for a key line to tie together all of this, see the Stipe posting of the Hunter S Thompson music industry quote on his Tumblir.

Agreed. Even EThan has admitted to being stunned by the news.

They are not including songs "intended" to be on the follow up album,   they are including songs they Record in July 2011, songs they already now will be for theirs greatest hits compilation.

  ring my bell now!!... if they were recording this songs in Athens....   is there a high possibility that these songs were recorded ... With Bill Berry on drums!???..   If so  it will be great!! , would be the perfect ending of this story for me.

I have been obsessed with that riff for quite some time now, I really hope this makes the greatest hits. (Although we're not even sure they recorded the song).

Perhaps that is true but so far I've only read that from the point of view of speculation, not from any of the band members themselves. Still, I don't see any cryptic messages in Collapse Into Now that signal the end of R.E.M. whether they be in the lyrics or the album cover art. Then again, I've never been one to read messages that aren't actually there into such things. If it makes it easier to digest the disbanding of R.E.M., so be it but I don't see it that way.

They knew they were going to split BEFORE Collapse into now was done: the proof is NOT the cover, nor the "all the best" lyrics.
The proof is a rushed, half baked album.

I beg to differ. Even though Mills said in interviews that R.E.M. had no future plans beyond the release of Collapse Into Now, he and Stipe also mentioned some songs that were left off of Collapse Into Now that they weren't sure what they'd do with. That doesn't necessarily denote a follow up album but it does indicate there might have been a place for them in a future project.

the question is: who, in this era of torrent and free download, will spend 15$ to buy a "best of" that they can arrange in 10 minutes at home? We just need to read the tracklist, and in few minutes I will have made a CD with those songs.
Anyway, I know that i will buy the CD...its love, nothing else... :-)
I will. I buy everything in physical product by R.E.M. I've never stopped buying the physical releases by the band, ever. And I will surely buy this one since it might be the last thing I buy concerning them for quite awhile.

I keep seeing people say there are going to be four unreleased tracks on this collection but I've yet to see anyone cite a source for that information. I have no doubt that it may be true but it certainly helps to validate such information.

The album wasn't rushed in the least. They wanted to get it out much sooner from what I heard, and tour it, but Warner wasn't having it.

The guys have been getting a little flack for the new greatest hits album, but I would like to point out that it really is their first real 'best of' as all the others have been false restrictions between 'IRS' and 'Warner' years, this will be their defintive idea of what their best songs have been. I thought they had already fuflilled their contract obligation to Warners with CIN, and are doing this last release through Warners on a one shot deal ( maybe Ethan can shed some light please?). Frankly I'm so glad there is going to be this release and some new songs as, frankly, this break up has been one of the great grief points in my life (  I have been luckly enough not to lose anyone so far!) and to qoute a great song I NEED THIS !!! much love
I WANTED MOUNT NOTHING!!!

What are the "false restrictions"? They're two separate record labels, one of which is extinct.

According to the interview Peter Buck did with The Big Takeover earlier this year, R.E.M. had one more small contractual obligation to fulfill with Warner Brothers. Apparently this greatest hits collection was it.
